Job Description

Description

The City of Walker is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and forward-thinking Information Technology (IT) Director to lead technology operations and strategic initiatives. The City of Grandville has an intergovernmental contract under which the City of Walker provides IT services to Grandville as well. This leadership position oversees technology infrastructure, cybersecurity, systems administration, vendor management, and long-range technology planning to ensure secure, reliable, and efficient services for both City operations.

 

What You'll Do

The IT Director will provide leadership and oversight for all technology services serving both municipalities by:

  • Developing and implementing technology strategies aligned with organizational goals.
  • Advising city leadership and department heads on technology priorities, projects, and investments.
  • Managing the IT Department, including personnel, budgeting, purchasing, and daily operations.
  • Ensuring the reliability, security, and continuity of systems, networks, telecommunications, and business-critical applications.
  • Leading cybersecurity initiatives, security audits, compliance efforts, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Evaluating and implementing technology solutions that improve efficiency and service delivery.
  • Managing technology vendors, consultants, contracts, and outsourced services.
  • Overseeing technology projects from planning through implementation.
  • Supporting city departments with technology planning, training, and technical expertise.
  • Maintaining compliance with applicable regulations, including CJIS requirements.

 

Leadership Responsibilities

This position provides supervision and leadership for:

  • Systems Administrator
  • Cyber Security Analyst
  • Two (2) IT Specialists
  • Consultants, contractors, and temporary staff

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Six (6) years of progressively responsible IT experience, including systems support, network administration, infrastructure management, application support, or service desk operations.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Experience managing technology projects, budgets, and resources.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain CJIS compliance throughout employment.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

 

Preferred

  • Municipal or local government experience.
  • Experience managing vendor and consultant relationships.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices, IT governance, and disaster recovery planning.

Summary

Work Environment

An employee in this position spends a portion of their time in-person in an office setting with a controlled climate where they sit and work on a computer for extended periods of time; communicate by telephone, e-mail or in person, and move around the office or travel to other locations to attend meetings and other job-related activities. This position may be eligible for remote work on a limited or situational basis as approved by the Assistant City Manager.

 

Additionally, this position spends a portion of their time traveling between facilities conducting inspections, repairs, and installations which typically involves moderate physical activity and exertion. An employee must have the strength, stamina and physical coordination required to complete physical inspections, repairs, and installations. This work occasionally involves crawling, stooping, climbing or otherwise accessing all areas of the site, and the employee is required to have the vision capabilities needed to complete visual inspections.
