Job Title: Janitor / Custodian
Department: Maintenance / Facilities
Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor or Plant Manager
Classification: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

GENERAL SUMMARY
The Janitor is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly manufacturing environment. This position performs routine cleaning and facility support activities throughout production areas, offices, restrooms, break rooms, warehouses, and exterior grounds. The Janitor helps ensure a professional workplace appearance while supporting employee safety, housekeeping standards, and operational efficiency.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Facility Cleaning & Housekeeping
• Empty trash and recycling containers throughout the facility.
• Clean and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms, break rooms, and common areas.
• Sweep, mop, scrub, and vacuum floors in offices, hallways, and production support areas.
• Clean windows, doors, walls, partitions, and other building surfaces as assigned.
• Dust and wipe desks, furniture, fixtures, and equipment surfaces.
• Replenish restroom and janitorial supplies, including paper products, soap, and sanitizers.
• Maintain cleanliness of employee entrances, cafeterias, and conference rooms.
 
Manufacturing Area Support
• Perform housekeeping activities in production and warehouse areas.
• Assist with cleaning around machinery and equipment when authorized.
• Remove debris, scrap material, and other non-production waste.
• Assist with maintaining clean and safe aisles, walkways, and work areas.
• Change air filters and perform basic facility housekeeping tasks as assigned.
Grounds & Exterior Maintenance
• Pick up litter and maintain exterior grounds.
• Assist with seasonal cleaning activities.
• Support snow removal, ice control, and salting efforts as directed.
• Maintain cleanliness around entrances, parking lots, sidewalks, and shipping/receiving areas.
 
Safety & Compliance
• Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
• Properly use cleaning chemicals, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Report unsafe conditions, maintenance issues, and building concerns to supervision.
• Maintain compliance with OSHA requirements and company housekeeping standards.
• Support facility inspections and continuous improvement initiatives.
 
Other Responsibilities
• Maintain janitorial equipment and report repair needs.
• Monitor cleaning supply inventory and notify supervision when replenishment is needed.
• Assist with facility setup and cleanup for company meetings or events.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Experience
• Previous janitorial, custodial, housekeeping, or industrial cleaning experience preferred.
• Manufacturing experience is a plus.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Strong attention to detail and organization.
• Dependable attendance and punctuality.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to communicate effectively with employees and supervisors.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbers, vacuums, and mops.
• Ability to work in varying temperatures and industrial environments.
• Ability to climb ladders when required.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position works throughout manufacturing facilities, warehouses, offices, restrooms, and exterior grounds. Employees may be exposed to noise, dust, cleaning chemicals, moving equipment, and varying weather conditions while performing assigned duties.
