About the Department

Grade 18 - Starting Hourly Rate: $32.00. Rate of pay depends on qualifications.

Hiring/Retention Incentive

External candidates who are hired by SAWS will receive a $1,000 Hiring Incentive. This incentive will be split into two payments of $500. The two payments will be made to the new hire on their second and fourth paycheck after they are hired. Upon successful completion of the new hire’s six-month introductory period, the new hire will also be eligible for an additional $1,000 Retention Incentive, which will be paid during their seventh month of employment with SAWS.

Position Duties

 JOB SUMMARY

The Journey Level Electrician is responsible for diagnosing, installing, maintaining, and testing high and low voltage and any associated electrical equipment. This position is responsible for wiring power distribution systems or transmission wiring and equipment up to 13.4KV capacity. May install, test and program equipment associated with the Building Monitoring and Control System (BMCS).

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Diagnoses, installs, tests, repairs and maintains electrical equipment associated with pumps, emergency power generators, high voltage switching, distribution equipment, air compressors, variable frequency drives, circuits, motors, fans, air conditioners, refrigerant systems, boilers and motor controls up to 4,160 volts and program programmable logic controllers.
  • Repairs and adjusts equipment, machines and defective components, replacing worn parts such as gaskets and seals in watertight electrical equipment.
  • Performs  preventative   maintenance  and  estimates   electrical  projects  to   include  material  and   cost associated and recommends repair or replacement of equipment such as the removal and installation of light fixtures, transformers, relays, ballast and florescent fixtures.
  • Applies principles and practices of National Electrical Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), electrical tables, electrical codes, work methods, tools, operation of high voltage and emergency equipment.
  • Reads and interprets electrical, schematics diagrams and documents and modifies for the purpose of upgrading the performance of electrical equipment and facilities.
  • Maintains inventory of necessary tools, equipment and spare parts.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, plans and manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Operates man lifts, bucket trucks and associated electrical maintenance equipment.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and public relations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES

  • Installs and tests new installations associated with the Building Monitoring and Control System (BMCS) of any SAWS facility.
  • Utilizes Building Management Systems (BMS), Metasys Building Management System (Dos Rios Lab), Micro main, word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
  • Investigates  problems   with  instruments  and  sensors  including   flow  meters,  variable   speed  drives, temperature sensors, pressure and level transmitters, air quality sensors, communication devices and interfaces associated with BMCS.
  • Carries out programming and configuration changes in the development of alarm settings, sensor limits, time schedules, temperature set points and control strategies related to BMCS.

 

DECISION MAKING

  • This position receives general supervision.
  • May be required to act as a Point of Contact (POC) for the electrical group you are assigned.

  

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Four years’ electrical experience.
  • State of Texas Journeyman Electrician’s License.
  • Valid Texas Class “C” Texas Driver’s License.
  • Training on Confined Space, HAZMAT Awareness, Lock Out Tag Out, Supervising for Safety, Fit Testing, Electrical Safety and other certifications as required.
  • Normal visual color discrimination.
  • Perform position specific physical testing.
  • Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five years’ commercial/industrial electrical experience
  • Ability to operate Truck mounted 3-ton crane, forklift, scissor jack, trencher, bucket truck and mini backhoe.
  • Completed certification or enrolled in a trade recognized electrical trades or electrical apprenticeship program (i.e.: St. Philips Electrical Trades, NJATC, IEC, etc.)

 

JOB DIMENSIONS

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers, contractors and governmental agencies.
  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, and database software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical requirements include lifting and dragging 50 pounds occasionally. Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform job scope. Also subject to climbing up to 200 feet in height. Requires visual acuity. 

 

Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to inclement weather; wastewater; mechanical, electrical, chemical and confined space hazards; offensive fumes; excessive noise; heavy traffic; deep excavations; and animals, snakes and poisonous insects. May be required to comply with requirements as specified in applicable regulations for personal protective equipment, including clearance for use of respiratory protection and other associated equipment. Also operates a company vehicle on a daily basis.


Will be required to work hours other than regular shift such as short notice/unscheduled overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call and rotating shifts.
