About this role
Atria Health Institute is seeking a detail-oriented and patient-focused Laboratory Assistant to support our state-of-the-art Institute in Los Angeles. The Laboratory Assistant plays a key role in providing exceptional patient care by assisting with specimen collection, performing waived point-of-care testing (POCT), preparing specimens for reference laboratory testing, maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment, and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory and safety standards.
This position works closely with physicians, Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs), nurses, and the laboratory leadership team to ensure efficient daily laboratory operations.
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
What you'll do
Patient Care
- Verify patient identity using established protocols.
- Collect blood specimens via venipuncture and capillary collection (as qualified and permitted).
- Collect and process urine and other non-blood specimens.
- Ensure proper specimen labeling and chain of custody.
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
Point-of-Care Testing
Perform and document CLIA-waived point-of-care testing, including but not limited to:
- Rapid COVID-19 testing
- Influenza testing
- Rapid Strep testing
- Urinalysis
- Urine pregnancy testing
- Blood glucose testing
- Additional CLIA-waived testing as implemented by the Institute
- Perform and document daily quality control according to manufacturer guidelines.
- Notify providers promptly of abnormal or critical results per established protocols.
Specimen Processing
- Prepare, package, and ship specimens to outside reference laboratories.
- Maintain specimen integrity during transport.
- Monitor laboratory courier schedules.
- Resolve specimen collection and labeling issues.
Laboratory Operations
- Maintain adequate laboratory inventory and supplies.
- Stock examination rooms and laboratory collection areas.
- Clean, disinfect, and organize laboratory workspaces.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance and maintain required documentation.
- Monitor refrigerator and freezer temperatures and maintain required logs.
- Assist with laboratory inspections and regulatory compliance.
Documentation & Compliance
- Accurately document laboratory activities in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Follow CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, infection prevention, and safety standards.
- Maintain required competencies, certifications, and continuing education, as applicable.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and laboratory process enhancements.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Medical Assistant certification or Phlebotomy certification (based on assigned duties).
- Experience performing venipuncture.
- Experience working in a clinical healthcare setting.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic computer and EMR proficiency.
Preferred
- Previous laboratory or ambulatory healthcare experience.
- Experience performing CLIA-waived point-of-care testing.
- Familiarity with CLIA laboratory regulations and quality control procedures.
- Current CPR/BLS certification.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, reaching, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Manual dexterity required for specimen collection and laboratory procedures.
- Ability to safely handle biological specimens while utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Hourly Range: $25-$32/hour
