Description
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for all aspects of the Laboratory department, including strategically developing new products for market as well as ensuring uninterrupted production to provide a complete and full line of cannabis concentrate and other cannabis extract products adequate to meet or surpass sales goals, while remaining compliant with state/federal, and other regulatory authorities and organizations.
The specific areas of direct supervision are:
- Assist the Director of Human Resources with hiring, training and developing team within the lab.
- Direct the development of new products with the Chief Operating Officer.
- Maintain detailed inventory records for laboratory equipment, medical cannabis, medical cannabis derivative products, by-products, waste, and in-process items.
- Create daily, weekly, and monthly production and staff schedules and provide report weekly.
- Maintain seven (7) days a week production schedule, and must provide agent one day off after 6 days of consecutive work (agents must not work seven days straight).
- Communicate and enforce laboratory safety rules to department and interdepartmental help.
- Schedule safety training and PPE fitting as needed for laboratory associates.
- Enforce laboratory PPE requirements.
- Maintain and update chemical, gas, and other ingredient inventories.
- Maintaining all documentation required to operate within budget and in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
Essential Functions:
- Hiring, training, and developing within the Department with assistance of Director of Human Resources.
- Train lab associates in proper lab equipment use, safety policy, and track development.
- Direct and assist with new product development guided by current industry trends.
- Update and maintain lab safety plan/manual and SDS manual.
- Manage production goals so always supply full menu, while adhering to labor cost guidelines.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and utensils in sanitary, safe and organized manner.
- Ensure that the laboratory department stays current with all applicable licensing as well as all documentation required.
Requirements
Minimum Education/Experience:
- Minimum Master’s degree in Chemistry and work experience in cannabis laboratory setting preferred.
- Minimum of five years’ experience managing a high production laboratory environment.
- Full knowledge of Department of Agriculture and Department of Public Health Rules.
- Fire Safety and Hazardous Material Safety training.
- Ability to quickly create and modify processes and procedures to for the department.
- Ability to communicate effectively across all levels within the organization.
- Ability to travel as necessary

Additional Requirements:
· Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
· Must possess valid state ID.
· Must be able to obtain, and maintain, state badging requirements in order to work in in cannabis industry (requires background check and state review).
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
With or without reasonable accommodation, requires the physical and mental capacity to perform effectively all essential functions. In addition to other demands, the demands of the job include:
- Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 lbs to a minimum height of 5 feet and able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet, with or without mechanical assistance.
- Must be able to work seated/standing as appropriate at workstations for extended periods, maintain body equilibrium while climbing ladders, stairways, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching, and use hands/fingers to hold, grasp, turn, pick, pinch frequently/constantly to complete tasks.
- Must be able to tolerate strong odors in the workplace.
- May be exposed to dust, kief, cleaning chemicals, and fumes. Although systems are in place to remove these byproducts, there is still exposure to some degree.
- Frequently works in rooms with bright light where eye protection is required.
- Frequently works in rooms with moderate heat and humidity.
- Constantly exposed to moderate background noise due to environmental systems, equipment, and fans.
- Must be able to wear PPE as appropriate (eye, face, hand, arm, head, foot, body, fall protection), and able to be exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions while wearing PPE (95 degrees or greater).
- Must have visual acuity with/without job aids to perform activities such as; reading, viewing a computer terminal, visual inspection involving small parts/details. Clarity of vision at 20 ft or more in day and night/dark conditions.
- Must be able to speak and communicate verbally at conversation levels with co-workers, vendors, etc. (Moderate noise).
· Must be able to handle organic matter daily, able to wear PPE as appropriate (eye, face, hand, arm, head, foot, body, fall protection), and able to be exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions while wearing PPE (95 degrees or greater)
- Frequent sitting and/or standing and walking, which may be required for long periods of time and may involve climbing stairs and walking up inclines and on uneven terrain.
Work Schedule:
· 40+ hours weekly with flexible hours depending on department needs.
· Must be available to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.
