Job Overview
Laser Department Leadman with dedicated expertise in Trumpf cutting technologies. In this dual-role position, you will serve as our frontline shop floor leader while actively setting up and operating our Trumpf laser cutting and automated punch systems. You will oversee a team of operators to optimize machine uptime and meet production schedule requirements. You will also be responsible for managing our sheet metal inventory, working with engineering to maximize material yield, and ensuring all components conform to precise technical models and drawings.
Key Responsibilities
• Trumpf Equipment Operation: Set up and operate Trumpf cutting machinery (e.g., Laser and TruMatic punch-laser combination systems).
• Supervise operators and coordinate with receiving department to properly receive and store sheet metal material and track material lots. Ensure department works to the daily production list and coordinate with the engineering team to optimize material utilization and minimize scrap.
• Machine Optimization: Perform daily machine setups, select appropriate cutting gases, replace optics/nozzles, and calibrate machine parameters for various sheet metal thicknesses and material types (aluminum, steel, stainless steel).
• Programming Support: Interface engineering utilizing CAD/CAM software (such as Boost) to troubleshoot, modify, or optimize cutting programs directly at the console.
• Quality Assurance: Work with inspection to help provide first-article and in-progress inspection records.
• Preventative Maintenance: Oversee and document routine preventative maintenance on Trumpf systems, coordinating directly with field service technicians when advanced troubleshooting is required.
• Safety Leadership: Enforce safe handling protocols for laser equipment, heavy sheet metal lifting, and proper handling of materials.
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Experience: 3–5+ years of manufacturing fabrication experience, with at least 2 years of dedicated experience operating and setting up industrial cutting equipment. Prior experience leading or mentoring a team is preferred.
• Software/Programming: Strong familiarity with Trumpf control interfaces and programming software such as Boost or equivalent CAD/CAM programs.
• Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of laser cutting dynamics, focal lens adjustment, gas pressures (Nitrogen/Oxygen), and laser power adjustments for various metal alloys. Expert blueprint and GD&T reading skills.
• Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and remain on your feet for extended periods in a heavy manufacturing environment.
• Education: High school diploma or GED required; certified Trumpf operator training or a vocational manufacturing degree is highly valued.
