Overview


Under direction of the Public Services Librarian, the primary responsibilities of this position include front line tasks related to circulation of library materials and patron customer service, working at the information desk, assisting patrons with wayfinding and general reference questions, and shelving library materials accurately. The position provides consistent, courteous and sincere customer service to patrons and library staff at all times. This position is responsible for acting as site supervisor as the full-time staff on duty for evening shifts, including making decisions regarding patron accounts and incidents or contacting administration as needed. All library employees are expected to approach work with the public and for the library through a lens of empathy and equity; to apply compassion, empathy, inclusivity, and equity to all areas of their work; and to demonstrate cultural humility.     


Essential Functions & Duties


  • Assisting patrons with technology related questions including general technology printing, use of computer programs, database navigation, and access to electronic resources. Shelve library materials in the correct location.
  • Understand and utilize library policies in relation to delivering public service.
  • Interact with and assist patrons in a sincere and consistent manner.
  • Providing story time coverage and assisting with children's programming as needed, including in the absence of full-time staff.
  • Perform shelf-reading accurately.
  • Work the circulation desk as assigned.
  • Accurately enter patron information into the computer system.
  • Assist patrons in the use of the library and finding materials.
  • Assist IT Coordinator with general technology-related duties as assigned.
  • Support programming staff with implementation of programs as needed.
  • Process and repair library materials as needed.
  • Catalog magazines and periodicals.
  • Repair and clean damaged A/V material.
  • Provide frontline support to the public for all areas related to library services.
  • Other duties assigned.


Qualifications


Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and currently working toward or have completed a high school diploma or equivalent. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to learn and use current library technology; relate effectively to a diverse range of people; adapt to varying and sometimes challenging situations; and work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends.

Must be available to work evenings and every other weekend as part of the regular work schedule.

Physical, Mental, & Environmental Requirements

Position requires light work with the ability to lift up to 20 pounds. Climbing, pulling, kneeling, stooping, fingering, crawling, crouching, feeling, standing, reaching, hearing, pushing, walking, balancing, lifting, grasping, talking, and repetitive motion is required on a regular basis. Visual and aural perception must be sufficient to operate a variety of office equipment and to communicate effectively with members of the public. Must be functionally literate in written and spoken English and be able to follow written and oral instructions. Position requires exposure to environmental conditions.
