The Riverside University Health System – Correctional Health Services (CHS) Department is seeking to fill a Licensed Vocational Nurse III – Per Diem position at the Indio Jail in Indio. Incumbents will be required to travel by driving to various detention facilities throughout Riverside County, including adjacent county jail facilities, based on operational and staffing needs.


Under supervision and direction of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or physician, performs nursing duties within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act in the care of patients in the Department of Mental Health or Public Health Ambulatory Family Health Center; and performs other related duties as required. The Licensed Vocational Nurse - Per Diem (LVN) is not an independent practitioner. Incumbents assigned to the LVN III - Per Diem class have four or more years of experience working as an LVN. The Licensed Vocational Nurse III - Per Diem is the advanced journey level in the LVN series for LVNs working in non-acute care assignments with the Department of Mental Health or Public Health Ambulatory Care. The LVN III - Per Diem performs the full range of professional nursing duties within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act and may have responsibility for directing and supervising staff and the operations of a clinic. Responsibilities are further expanded to include assignments in training needs assessment, in-service training, problem-solving clinical and administrative issues, and participating in standardized related policies and procedures. The LVN III - Per Diem may serve in the absence of the registered nurse or manager in charge of the clinic, as needed, and supervise preceptor and mentor staff who have been assigned to the clinic. The Licensed Vocational Nurse is distinguished from the class of Nursing Assistant, Health Services Assistant, or Certified Medical Assistant in that a state license is required and are expected to perform the more highly skilled form of patient care. Per Diem personnel are distinguished from regular employees in that they receive additional compensation in lieu of County fringe benefits and work assignments may be on a flexible work hour schedule.

The most competitive candidates will have at least one year of experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) providing direct patient care in an acute-care or clinic setting. Incumbents will deliver nursing care within the scope of the Licensed Vocational Nurse Practice Act and perform duties including medication administration to large groups of patients (oral, subcutaneous, and intramuscular), blood withdrawals and venipuncture, diabetic checks, wound care and dressing changes, vital signs, PPD placement and readings, COVID-19 testing and vaccinations, biological immunizations, specimen collection for laboratory analysis, and other scheduled treatments. Additional responsibilities include assisting physicians, mid-level providers, and registered nurses with examinations, treatments, patient care planning, and patient education; maintaining accurate medical records in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act and departmental policies and procedures; observing and reporting changes in patient condition; and performing other patient-care and clinical duties as assigned. This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.


Work Schedule: 3/12 - Night Shift (6:00 pm to 6:30 am) 
Rotating schedule on bi-weekly basis; shift hours below will be determined by department based on availability after start.

Position Duties

Examples of Essential Duties (may include but not limited to)
• Provide nursing care to patients within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act; prepare patients for physicians, registered nurses, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, and care for patients during treatment; administer medications using subcutaneous, intramuscularly, intradermal, subdermal, and/or oral methods.

• Take temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure of patients as necessary; apply and change dressings and care for wounds; may collect specimens for laboratory analysis; assist physicians, registered nurses, and mid-level providers in performing examinations, respiratory care, and other treatments including minor surgical procedures, PAP smears, and colposcopies.

• Perform venipuncture and injection of medications including biological immunizations for pediatrics and adults, in addition to the provision of Tuberculin skin tests, Coccidioidin skin tests, and Histoplasmin skin tests in the course of a tuberculosis control program.

• Perform documentation as required within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act and established rules of charting; chart treatments and medications and maintain pertinent medical records; collect data from patients to ensure scheduling with appropriate services; maintain clinical records, reports and charge tickets; review charts to determine type of treatment the patient may require and assure proper clinic scheduling and continuity of care.

• Counsel, advise, and educate patients regarding proper healthcare methods; set clinic appointments per established policies and procedures; refer patients for specialty care to outside agencies utilizing knowledge of payor source to ensure appropriate referrals to outside agencies and programs.

• Assist physicians, registered nurses, and mid-level providers in the administration of special treatments, examinations, and intravenous therapy; chart treatments and medications and maintain pertinent medical records according to established practice by the Vocational Nursing Practice Act policies and procedures.

• Assist physicians, registered nurses, and mid-level providers in the administration of medical records; assist in the data collection, preparation, and implementation of patient care plans; participate in patient education and rehabilitation programs and document data appropriately.

• Observe patient's condition and behavior, reporting significant changes to the supervisor.

• May act under supervision and direction of a physician, registered nurse, or mid-level provider as a nursing leader over Health Services Assistants, Certified Medical Assistants, Office Assistants, and other LVNs, as assigned.

• Participate in, or provide leadership, to various committee meetings and present and/or gather data and information to assist management in making administrative and operational decisions; participate or provide leadership in committee activities related to performance improvement issues by auditing patient records.

• Serve as a preceptor and on-going mentor to nursing staff; act as a resource to other staff and administration, actively supporting the Nurse Manager and supervisory staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of four years of successful experience as an LVN, preferably in a public health clinic environment and/or in a leadership capacity.

License/Certificate: Possession of a current, valid California Vocational Nurse License issued by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians Examiners.

Possession of current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificates issued by the American Heart Association for professional healthcare providers.

Possession of a current, valid IV Therapy/Blood Withdrawal Certification issued by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians is required.

A current, valid California Driver's License is required for some positions in this class.


Physical Requirements: Lifting to 50 pounds; standing for long periods

Knowledge of: Current principles, techniques and procedures used in vocational nursing within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act; medical terminology and acute care procedures and equipment; medication administration and any policies and procedures of the setting assigned.
