POSITION SUMMARY
This role is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a major subway line or corridor on a 24/7 basis. The position manages all core operational functions, including train yard activities, passenger service delivery, and the protection and coordination of internal staff and outside contractors. The incumbent leads teams across multiple operational areas, responds to emergencies and major service disruptions, and ensures full compliance with MTA NYCT rules, safety standards, and rapid transit procedures. The role requires strong decision‑making under pressure, extensive knowledge of rail transit systems and equipment, and the ability to direct complex operational and administrative programs within tight timeframes. For Subdivision C roles, responsibilities also include oversight of flagging and work‑train operations, General Order implementation, and both short‑ and long‑term resource planning.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Oversee and control all functions required for the safe and efficient operation of a major subway line or corridor on a 24/7 basis.
• Manage all employees directly and indirectly involved in train yard operations, passenger service, and the protection and support of internal staff and external contractors.
• Respond to emergencies and major service disruptions, ensuring appropriate actions are taken to restore safe and reliable service.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1) High School Diploma or its educational equivalent and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience of which four (4) years must have been in a managerial/supervisory capacity - OR -
2) A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience.
DESIRED SKILLS
• Strong knowledge of rail rapid transit procedures, including emergency response and safety protocols.
• Thorough understanding of MTA NYCT rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of rolling stock, work equipment, and information and signal systems.
• Demonstrated ability to manage operational and administrative programs of significant scope under tight deadlines and challenging conditions.
• Strong decision‑making skills in emergency situations, with the ability to motivate staff and resolve conflicts effectively.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• For Subdivision C positions: knowledge of flagging and work‑train operations, General Order procedures, and experience in short‑ and long‑term resource planning.
SELECTION METHOD
Based on evaluation of education, skills, experience, interview, and written assessment.
