Job Description
Plans and designs manufacturing processes for a production facility

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for several components of a project or a complex component of a larger project. 
  • Contributes to their team or department by applying their knowledge of one or more functional areas. 
  • Fully developed professional able to work without direct guidance or direction from others. 
  • Works closely with leaders and operators to support continuous improvement. 
  • Communicates professionally with leadership, teammates and operations personnel using appropriate technical language and descriptions. 
  • Has in depth knowledge of the discipline and role. 
  • Works and communicates well with other members of the engineering team and with members of the production team as well as external vendors. 
  • Evaluates mechanical and electromechanical systems and products by designing and conducting research programs; applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials. 
  • Confirms system and product capabilities by designing feasibility and testing methods; testing properties. 
  • Utilize existing or gather new data to guide and implement process and/or design improvements. 
  • Develop and test prototypes of devices they design. 
  • Develops manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, and installing components. 
  • Completes projects by training and guiding technicians. 
  • Provides training and ongoing support on manufacturing systems. 
  • May work with the product design team as a manufacturing representative, providing feedback on new product design and product updates with respect to manufacturability.  Advocates for DFMA best practices. 
  • May act as a liaison between the product design team and various manufacturing and production departments, solicits and returns feedback bi-directionally. 
  • May provide information to help guide design decisions, such as labor costing estimates, capital investment requirements, and process feasibility, determined through research and consultation with internal and external vendors. 
  • May support electronic production specific processes such as SMT, Wave Soldering, hand assembly techniques of circuit boards, and inspection. 
  • May support mechanical production specific processes such as blanking, cutting, forming, hardware insertion, welding, coating, machining, turning, casting, molding, inspection. 
  • Preferred, but not required: Experience with SolidWorks, experience with programming and use of manual or CNC 3-axis mills, experience with use of manual or CNC lathe, experience with sheet metal design & fabrication, experience with MIG & TIG welding.

Education

BA/BS degree w/6-9+ years’ experience or MA/MS degree w/3-6+ years’ experience or AA/AS/Technical School w/8-12+ years’ experience.
