Required Job Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing (RN) program.
- Current and active RN license registered with the Minnesota Board of Nursing.
- CPR certified.
- Working knowledge of the computer programs and Minimum Data Set (MDS) coding system utilized at Mother of Mercy.
- Proven ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in affecting/directing patient care in Long Term Care (LTC) setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3 years of long term care experience with at least 1 year of MDS experience.
- 2 years of effective leadership or management experience.
- Basic understanding of Medicare/Medicaid and third party payer programs.
Job Summary: Provide, direct, and oversee nursing care provided to residents on an assigned care unit as a salaried, exempt professional. This position requires advanced knowledge of nursing and effective compliant administrative practices. This position is responsible for resident assessments, care planning, and the direction of staff. It requires the consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion to provide and ensure the delivery of high quality care to residents through effective management of systems and staff. This position reports to the DON and is part of a supervisory team that meets regularly with the Administrator and C.E.O. to ensure effective management of human and material resources, as well as high quality care, resident satisfaction, and regulatory compliance at Mother of Mercy.
Essential Responsibilities and Functions:
- Ensure fulfillment of resident care plans, both in the capacity as a Registered Nurse, and in the management of staff and systems.
- Conduct proper, regular, and timely evaluation of physical and mental condition of each resident and report same through Minimum Data Set (MDS) system as required by federal and state requirements and guidelines.
- Represent and provide nursing leadership at resident care conferences.
- Provide direct care to residents as necessary, including circumstances relating to staff shortage and for staff training purposes.
- Develop and manage necessary communications to residents, families, staff, physicians, supervisors, other departments and outside entities including vendors and contractors.
- Exercise authority to investigate, resolve, and properly report complaints or incidents to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations and policies.
- Effectively direct and manage nursing services and staff including RN’s, LPN’s, TMA’s, NA/R’s and others on an assigned floor or unit, including apportioning the work and scheduling of staff, determining the methods, techniques, practices to be used, and the type of materials, machinery, equipment and supplies to be used at Mother of Mercy.
- Monitor and evaluate staff performance for the purpose of coaching and taking disciplinary action, as necessary, and to recommend promotions or changes in status.
- Mediate staff disputes and clarify staff misunderstandings to ensure effective teamwork and positive resident oriented outcomes.
- Provide feedback regarding new hires and termination of current staff.
- Work with DON to provide on-call and on-site direction to staff as part of a call and coverage rotation system.
- Chair or serve on a minimum of one Quality Assurance (QA) committee related to resident and/or staff issues.
- Be dependable in performing tasks, duties, attendance and as example for others.
- Demonstrates teamwork through attitude, assistance, and cooperative approach to working with residents, visitors, staff, supervisors, and to ensure necessary on-site and on-call nursing oversight and supervision.
- Satisfactorily perform other tasks assigned by supervisor.
- Actively engage in organizational and department plans and budgets through identification of goals and necessary resources for effective management of assigned care unit, and manage unit to help effectuate or control the budget.
- Provides leadership to staff, particularly on assigned care unit, in respect to organizational goals with emphasis on those related to quality of care and safety.
