Job Description

Bargaining Unit: Non Represented - Supervisor

Rate of Pay: $141,939 annually + DOE

Summary
Under the general direction of the Manager, MedSurg/ ICU, supervises the daily clinical and operational activities of the Medical-Surgical and ICU departments, including oversight of unit staff and the coordination of patient care from admission through discharge. Ensures that care and services are delivered appropriately, that patient care is coordinated and managed, and that optimal outcomes consistent with patient satisfaction goals are achieved. Establishes and maintains positive relationships with patients, families, and referral sources. Serves as a clinical resource and mentor for unit staff and assists the Manager with staffing, training, and regulatory compliance functions.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Staff Supervision and Leadership
  • Assists in hiring unit employees, oversees training, counsels when necessary, and provides input on performance evaluations for direct-reporting staff.
  • Develops and maintains staff nurse onboarding program.
  • Filters and prioritizes communication from the staff nurse team to upper management.
  • Collaborates with the Manager regarding staff concerns and/or issues.
  • Ensures adequate daily staffing and 24-hour coverage across the units. Assists the Manager and House Supervisor in coordinating coverage for immediate staffing shortages.
  • Assists the Manager in establishing work standards that provide a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates leadership and professional growth, and acts as a resource and mentor for other nurses.
Clinical and Daily Operations
  •  Is a working supervisor who will be designated Team Lead / Charge Nurse when working in the unit.
  • Performs all aspects of the Staff Nurse ICU job description and assists in patient care and procedures as needed.
  • Assists the Manager in overseeing daily clinical operations, ensuring delivery of the highest levels of clinical quality and customer service in the most cost-effective manner.
  • Communicates throughout the day with physicians and staff to ensure optimal coordination in the delivery of medical services.
  • Implements operational changes as directed by the Manager, MedSurg/ICU.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance and survey readiness. Monitors that patient confidentiality is observed.
  • Coordinates with the Manager, PCT Supervisor and Unit Clerks to ensure accurate and complete billing and charge capture.
  • Resolves customer complaints or forwards them to the Manager as appropriate.
  • Coordinates ordering of medical supplies with direction of the Manager.
  • Serves as the site specialist for computer software used to manage department operations, educating staff on optimal use and troubleshooting issues with IT as needed.
Administrative and Quality
  • Assist the Manager with audits, statistics, policies and procedures as needed, and monitors and maintains department records and documentation.
  • Actively supports and participates in the organization-wide Quality Performance Improvement Plan and department quality improvement programs.
  • Strives to attain and maintain regional "best practice" recognition.
  • Attends ICU/MedSurg meetings as an alternate for the Manager and assists in coordinating staff meetings and skills days.
  • Actively applies communication principles.
  • Completes special projects as requested.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor's Degree Graduation from a National League of Nursing (NLN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or equivalent accredited school of nursing. and 1-2 years relevant experience

BLS/ACLS: Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS). Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS and ACLS certification).

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS): Employees that have never been certified must take a live initial AHA certification class. Employees with recently expired certifications will be enrolled in Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI). Certification must be completed within specified time frame.

Other Experience/Qualifications
Required
  • Five years ICU and/or Medical-Surgical/ Telemetry experience
  • Ability to communicate well with others
  • Prior experience as a Charge Nurse / Team Lead
  • Demonstrates competence in general nursing skills
Preferred
  • One to two years of experience in health care coordination and/or supervision
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR)/EPIC experience
  • Leadership ability
  • Prior experience coordinating staff schedules and daily assignments
  • Prior involvement in performance improvement projects
