Position Summary
The Medical Assistant (Credentialed/Certified) is responsible for assisting in the daily activities of the clinic operation, performing a variety of clinical and clerical tasks in an outpatient clinical setting. Primary responsibilities include taking vital signs, putting patients in rooms, reviewing Electronic Health Record (EHR) to ensure completeness of medical record and assisting the provider or nurse with treatments.
Duties & Responsibilities
Performs direct patient care tasks such as the
following: Works under the direction of physician, APN and nursing staff.
Registers
patients on arrival, making sure the registration information is correct within
the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Guides patients to exam rooms and
prepares the patient and room for the provider.
Obtains and documents patient’s
vital signs in the EHR. Analyzes and organizes the patient’s medical record within
the EHR prior to the provider completing the patient exam.
Takes medical
health history by interviewing patient and/or family.
Assures the EHR is
complete and includes any recent labs, tests, or procedures that were
completed at outside agencies. Obtains missing documentation and documents completely
and accurately.
Completes in-office labs, tests and injections as directed by
the provider.
Takes telephone
messages and provides feedback and answers to patient/physician/pharmacy
calls.
Teaches the patient in specific healthcare topics.
Performs in-direct patient
care tasks such as the following: Receives and processes messages from patients and front
office staff to providers.
Authorizes
prescription refills as directed by providers.
Submits prescriptions to
pharmacies via telephone, fax or e-scribe.
Collects and prepares laboratory
specimens.
Cleans the examining rooms and medical equipment.
Orders new
supplies and equipment for the clinic; stocks exam rooms.
Manages specialty referrals
and assists with prior authorizations. Enters
and updates patient vaccine records in the I-CARE registry.
Schedules
surgeries and diagnostic procedures.
Performs clerical duties such as the following: Keeps patient
files, medical records, and laboratory results.
Enters data from monitoring
systems such as medication refrigerators and other quality or safety data.
Assists with Quality
Improvement (QI) projects.
Assists with the handling and routing of office
mail.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects
as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduation or equivalent
- Possession of a current/valid medical assistant certification by an approved certifying board as defined by the employing institution
Preferred Qualifications
- Pediatrics Experience Preferred
