About The Role
The Medical Assistant Externship is an entry-level, hands-on learning opportunity within our Medical Assistant department. This role is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience who are enrolled in, or have recently completed, a Medical Assistant training program and are seeking real-world clinical exposure. Under close supervision of licensed clinical staff, you will support day-to-day patient care activities and administrative tasks while developing the skills, professionalism, and confidence needed for a career as a Medical Assistant. This is an hourly, per diem position, offering flexible scheduling to accommodate academic commitments or other responsibilities.
What You'll Do
- Work under the direct supervision of licensed medical and administrative staff to support daily clinic operations
- Greet patients, verify basic information, and assist with the patient check-in and check-out process
- Escort patients to exam rooms and help prepare them for visits by collecting basic information as directed (e.g., reason for visit, review of symptoms)
- Observe and, as appropriate and permitted, assist with taking and recording vital signs under supervision
- Support the maintenance of clean, safe, and well-stocked exam rooms and clinical areas
- Assist with preparing and organizing medical instruments and supplies according to established procedures
- Practice proper infection control techniques, including hand hygiene and standard precautions as instructed
- Assist with basic documentation in the electronic or paper medical record as directed and in accordance with policies
- Provide courteous, respectful, and confidential service to all patients, families, and visitors
- Collaborate with clinical and administrative team members to ensure efficient patient flow and a positive patient experience
- Participate in training, coaching, and feedback sessions to build clinical, technical, and professional skills
- Adhere to all clinical policies, safety procedures, and privacy regulations, including HIPAA and organizational standards
- Perform other related duties and learning activities as assigned, consistent with externship objectives and level of training
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed an accredited Medical Assistant or related healthcare training program
- No prior professional experience required; interest in gaining hands-on clinical and administrative experience in an outpatient or clinic setting
- Basic understanding of common medical terminology and clinical concepts learned through coursework or training
- Ability to follow instructions carefully and work under close supervision in a fast-paced environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills in English, with the ability to interact professionally with patients, families, and staff
- Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and a strong desire to learn and develop new skills
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and handle sensitive information in accordance with privacy regulations and organizational policies
- Basic computer skills and willingness to learn clinic-specific software or electronic health record systems
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist with patient-related tasks for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation
- Availability to work on an hourly, per diem basis with a flexible schedule as determined by department needs
