Metal Fabricator - CNC & Welding

Who We Are -
Viewrail designs and manufactures premium stair and railing systems—handling everything from sales and design through fabrication and delivery. Our metal shop is a core part of that operation, producing a wide variety of custom made metal parts that ship across the country. We’re a team that takes quality seriously, holds each other accountable, and keeps improving.

About the Role -
The Metal Fabricator is a skilled, hands-on production team member responsible for cutting, welding, grinding, and finishing structural steel components used in Viewrail railing and staircase systems. This individual operates specialized equipment including a Hydmech horizontal bandsaw and a Flex CNC machine, performs multi-process MIG welding, and contributes to the safe and efficient movement of material through the production floor. The ideal candidate brings technical precision, a quality-first mindset, and a strong commitment to working as part of a high-performing team.

Responsibilities: (These requirements are in addition to any and all Viewrail employment requirements and policies.)
  • Machine Operation
    • Operate a Hydmech horizontal bandsaw to cut structural steel tube and bar stock to specified lengths with accuracy and repeatability
    • Program and operate a Flex CNC machine to produce precision-cut components per engineering drawings and job traveler requirements
    • Perform routine machine checks, adjustments, and basic maintenance to maintain uptime and output quality
  • Welding
    • Perform MIG welding on mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum to weld procedure specifications
    • Maintain consistent, clean weld appearance and structural integrity across all material types
    • Select appropriate wire, shielding gas, and machine settings based on material and joint type
    • Inspect welds visually and correct defects before parts advance to the next production stage
  • Grinding, Sanding & Finishing
    • Grind and blend welds, remove sharp edges, and dress surfaces to meet finish specifications
    • Sand and polish components to achieve required cosmetic and surface finish standards
    • Use angle grinders, belt sanders, flap discs, and related finishing tools safely and effectively
  • Material Handling & Flow
    • Safely move heavy steel tube and fabricated assemblies across conveyor systems between workstations
    • Stage, organize, and transport material using proper lifting techniques and material handling equipment
    • Keep work areas, aisles, and staging zones clean, labeled, and free of hazards
  • Measurement & Quality
    • Read and interpret tape measures, angle finders, and basic shop drawings to verify dimensions and geometry
    • Perform first-article and in-process inspection checks against job travelers and quality standards
    • Identify non-conforming parts and escalate to team lead or quality personnel appropriately
    • Contribute to a first-pass quality culture by owning workmanship at the point of production
  • Teamwork & Communication
    • Collaborate closely with adjacent operators and team leads to maintain production flow and meet daily targets
    • Communicate proactively about material shortages, equipment issues, or quality concerns
    • Participate in daily team huddles, 5S activities, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • All other job duties and responsibilities as assigned

Required Skills:
  • Experience MIG welding on mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum
  • Prior experience with metal finishing tools such as angle grinders, belt sanders, etc.
  • Ability to accurately read a tape measure and an angle finder
  • Ability to stand for extended periods (8 to 10 hour shifts) and perform repetitive physical tasks throughout a shift.
  • Ability to safely handle and move large steel tubes and structural stock along a roller conveyor/transfer table.
  • Strong commitment to product quality and personal workmanship standards
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment

Desired Skills:
  • Ability to read basic shop drawings
  • Experience with 5S, lean manufacturing, or similar continuous improvement practices
  • Prior experience operating a forklift or overhead crane
  • Prior experience operating a horizontal bandsaw (Hydmech or equivalent)
  • Prior hands-on experience with a CNC milling machine (Flex or comparable platform)
How We Work -
We hold ourselves to six operating principles—not as slogans, but as the daily standard for how we show up and get work done.
  • Built to Grow. We’re not looking for people who’ve got it all figured out. We want people who are curious, coachable, and willing to put in the effort to get better.
  • Better Together. Strong results come from strong teams. We communicate clearly, support each other, and don’t let problems sit.
  • Grounded & Great. We do what we say we’re going to do. Quality, follow-through, and accountability aren’t optional—they’re the baseline.
  • Think It Through. Before you act, understand the impact. We want people who ask the right questions and flag problems before they become bigger ones.
  • Be the Expert. Own your station. Know your process. If you see a better way, say something.
  • Partnership & Accountability. We succeed as a team. That means owning your results—good or bad—and showing up for the people around you.
