Middle School Mathematics Teacher: Description and Responsibilities
The Algebra I (8th Grade) & 6th Grade Mathematics Teacher is responsible for cultivating students' mathematical understanding, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities in a manner consistent with the principles of classical education. Through engaging instruction and thoughtful mentorship, the teacher fosters both intellectual growth and virtuous habits of mind as students develop confidence and competence in mathematics.
The teacher will:
- Teach 6th Grade Mathematics and Algebra I (8th Grade), guiding students in the development of computational fluency, conceptual understanding, logical reasoning, and mathematical communication.
- Work collaboratively with the mathematics faculty to establish and maintain an appropriate scope and sequence of instruction, ensuring continuity across grade levels and continually refining instructional practices to strengthen student learning.
- Teach students to approach mathematics as a coherent, logical discipline by providing instruction that:
- Is engaging, relatable, and appropriately challenging.
- Cultivates virtue, perseverance, precision, and an appreciation for beauty and order inherent in mathematics.
- Emphasizes logical reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving while encouraging students to explain, justify, and apply mathematical concepts in meaningful contexts.
- Prepares students for continued success in upper-level mathematics through strong foundational skills and conceptual understanding.
- Foster a classroom culture that encourages curiosity, intellectual confidence, diligence, and respectful collaboration.
- Model enthusiasm for mathematics and demonstrates how careful reasoning, disciplined thinking, and perseverance contribute to lifelong learning.
- Establish and maintain a syllabus for each course that clearly communicates learning objectives, course expectations, grading policies, and assessment schedules to students and parents.
- Maintain accurate and timely gradebooks, updating grades and comments (when applicable) at least every two weeks.
- Provide regular feedback to students, supporting both academic growth and the development of effective study habits.
- Hold office hours or provide additional academic support opportunities at least twice per week at times accessible to students.
- Communicate promptly and professionally with students and families regarding student progress, classroom expectations, and opportunities for improvement through electronic communication, phone, or in-person meetings.
- Collaborate with colleagues through department meetings and interdisciplinary conversations as requested by the Upper School Dean or Department Lead to strengthen mathematics instruction, ensure curricular alignment, and contribute to the continued development of STEM education at The Saint Constantine School.
