Duties and responsibilities
Entering CNC programs into the machine, either by creating new programs or utilizing existing ones, to control the cutting process.
Loading and unloading raw materials onto the machine.
Watching the machine during operation, ensuring it runs smoothly and adjusting as needed to maintain quality.
Regularly checking finished parts against specifications using measuring tools to verify accuracy and identify defects.
Performing basic cleaning, routine maintenance and lubrication on the CNC machine, identifying and reporting any malfunctions to ensure optimal performance and prevent malfunctions.
Maintaining production logs and recording relevant data like machine settings, quality checks, and any issues encountered.
Troubleshoot and resolve minor machine issues or notify the maintenance department for repairs.
Follow all company safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
Qualifications
Required Education & Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 1 - 2+ years of experience operating CNC mills and lathes in a manufacturing, production or metal fabrication setting.
- Familiarity with quality control procedures and the ability to perform inspections on finished products.
- Willingness to undergo training and continuing education to stay updated with new techniques and technologies in CNC mills and lathes.
- Completion of the established Skill Pie per location.
- Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers, extremely organized.
- Working knowledge of diverse high-speed machinery and measurement tools (caliper, micrometer etc.); ability to operate light equipment, good knowledge of mechanical devices.
- Previous crane and forklift experience preferred.
- Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
- Strong attention to details, analytical skills, exceptional judgment, dependable, excellent teamwork skills, good time management skills, creative, problem-solving, hardworking & persistent, professional competence, proactive
- Forklift certification.
- Current/active driver’s license
Preferred Education & Experience:
- Technical Degree, or an equivalent combination of education & experience
- 3 - 5+ years of increasingly responsible experience as a CNC machinist in a manufacturing, production, or metal fabrication setting.
- Welder certification
- Crane certification
Working conditions
Travel 10% of time for meetings at other SSAB locations, deliveries, trainings, seminars & conferences as needed.

- Ability to perform the essential job functions consistent safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, provincial and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
