Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:
The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently hiring a Motor Equipment Operator I to perform a variety of tasks in the Stormwater Maintenance division, duties to include:
- Operate a dump truck in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel, and supplies.
- Operate a light truck in carrying tools, equipment, and supplies, to and from the job site.
- Operate a motor truck engaged in snow removal or sanding of icy streets and roads.
- Operate a dump truck and/or backhoe in making ditch repairs.
- Operate a Ditch Master
- Service and perform minor repairs on automotive equipment, including, but not limited to, excavator, frontend loader, and backhoe.
- Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.
- Position also requires a significant amount of work by hand when cleaning drainage structures, pipes, ditches, removing debris, cutting down trees, and shoveling sediment.
- Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.
- Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.
** Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License – Class B or A (VA or NC)
** A pre-employment physical is required.
** Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday; 6:30 am to 5:00 pm
CDL Hiring Bonus –
Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:
- $1,000 with first paycheck
- $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
- $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow, etc.).

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Requires completion of tenth (10th) grade, plus one (1) year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license.Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial Drivers license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.
