About the Department
Intended as a one- to two-year internship, the Museum Intern helps out in all areas of the Museum. Duties may include helping to construct exhibits, greeting visitors and explaining exhibits, performing research on projects as requested, running errands, setting up and tearing down for meetings, answering phones, and many other tasks.
The person who is hired would work approximately 12-14 hours per week, including work on weekends and at other times the student is available. The Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday, 10 AM to 3 PM. The current work hours for this position are Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM (but starting at 9 AM twice per month), and Sunday, 10 AM to 3 PM.

POSITION SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, performs a variety of staff support activities for the County Museum.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Museum Intern position is distinguished from the Museum Assistant position by the former's need for more direct supervision and training and the lack of experience and/or education required for the Museum Intern.
Position Duties
- Greets and assists general public, customers and staff in person, over telephone and by email; answers inquiries; receives and attempts to resolve complaints; provides guidance on museum programs and exhibits.
- Performs special projects and/or research for specific projects as requested by the Museum Director or other staff.
- Maintains manual records of visitors.
- Runs errands as needed.
- Administers memberships, payments and special donations; records information on computer files as well as manual records.
- Provides retail operations support; assists customers in locating merchandise, answers questions, performs gift wrapping and/or other special services, communicates policies on returns and exchanges; monitors for shoplifting; resolves customer complaints and processes merchandise returns, refunds or exchanges; performs cashiering functions in accordance with cash handling policies and procedures; uses appropriate verification procedures for credit card purchases; balances cash register at conclusion of day.
- Performs general building maintenance and custodial upkeep ensuring cleanliness of building, including restrooms; reports major unsanitary conditions to Facilities staff.
- Monitors visitors during facility hours of operation to ensure orderly conduct; reports unsafe conditions; opens and closes facility as required.
- Sets up and takes down meeting rooms, including the folding and un-folding of tables; inspects and repairs equipment as necessary; operates audiovisual equipment as needed.
- Restocks materials and supplies as required.
- Operates standard office equipment, including but not limited to word processors, computers, facsimile equipment, copy machine, scanners, cash register and central telephones.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Museum's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
- Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Literacy equivalent to the eighth grade level.
- Keyboarding experience.
Knowledge of:
- The history and culture of the City, County and State.
- County policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
- Principles and techniques of effective customer service.
- Business arithmetic.
- Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Basic record keeping practices.
- The use of specified computer applications involving word processing, data entry and/or standard report generation.
- Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
- Business letter writing and the standard format for typed materials
- Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, often in situations which may be stressful.
Skill in:
- Managing cash and receipts.
- Providing customer service.
- Performing detailed office support work.
- Maintaining accurate office files.
- Entering numerical and related information into a computer system with speed and accuracy.
- Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or Museum goals, objectives and activities.
- Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with staff, coworkers, and the public.

Benefits
Benefits for casual employees are limited to social security and Medicare contributions. Employees are required to pay their portion of the social security and Medicare contributions.
