Equipment Operator & Trash Truck Driver
JOB
SUMMARY
This
position performs duties in support of the department’s grounds maintenance
operations.
MAJOR DUTIES
Assists with grounds maintenance activities; mows grass, cut weeds, clears brush, and rakes leaves.
Plants trees, flowers, and shrubs; trims trees and shrubs.
Collects litter from campus grounds; empties trash cans.
Moves office furniture; assists with setting up for special events.
Captures and relocates nuisance animals.
Applies herbicide and pesticide.
Safely operates a variety of equipment including a backhoe, dump truck, trash truck, forklift, and skid steer.
Operates hand and power tools, including chain saws, weedeaters, and lawn mowers.
Cleans up storm damage.
Operates equipment for ice and snow removal operations.
Loads and unloads trucks.
Transports materials and equipment to work sites.
Assists with welding projects.
Light repairs and service of equipment as needed.
Hauls mulch and bulk material from suppliers.
Provides support to other maintenance personnel.
Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of heavy machinery, equipment operation, and maintenance principles.
Knowledge of trash compactor maintenance and operation principles.
Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
Skill in the operation of job-related tools, vehicles and equipment.
Leadership ability.
Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY
CONTROLS
The Landscape and Grounds Supervisor assigns work in terms
of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for
compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final
results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include university policies and procedures. These
guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation
in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related equipment operation duties. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the position.
The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of equipment in support of department operations. Success in this position results in safe and well-maintained buildings and grounds.
CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with co-workers, other university personnel, faculty, staff, students, vendors, contractors, and members of the general public.
Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT
RESPONSIBILITY
In the absence of the Landscape and Grounds Supervisor, the
Equipment Operator and Trash Truck Driver may temporarily stand in as the Landscape
and Grounds Supervisor. This position has direct supervision over Landscape and
Grounds Specialist (1) and Grounds Foreman (3). This position reports directly
to the Director of Facilities Management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to operate dump truck, miscellaneous excavation equipment, and fork lift.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with having three to five years of heavy equipment operation and driving experience.
Possession of a valid Class B CDL with airbrake endorsement issued by the State of Oklahoma for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
CDL Class A with airbrake endorsement.
Experience performing maintenance and light repairs on excavation and groundskeeping equipment.
Annual salary $41,844.00 with excellent benefits, including generous leave time.
