JOB DESCRIPTION
SCHOOL NURSE
QUALIFICATIONS:
Medical-related license issued by the state of Florida. LPN Preferred
Current medical office experience.
Current CPR and First Aid certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to operate workplace computer, scanner, telephone, and accompanying software utilized by the school district and school health program. Knowledge in first aid to triage and treat injuries and illnesses. Knowledge of basic medical terminology is important. Must have skills in taking vital signs, obtaining complete medical history, and skills in using medical instruments and/or testing equipment. Must have the ability to follow instructions both verbally and written. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in verbal and written form, and the ability to maintain an effective working relationship with other nursing staff, school district staff, and other agencies. Must have professional customer service skills cooperating in a courteous manner with staff, parents, students, and other agencies providing services to school health. Must have the knowledge and ability to administer medications per doctor’s orders and to keep accurate documentation. Ability to observe students for development and abnormal health patterns, communicating with parents, and making appropriate medical referrals.

Coordinator of Safety and Supervised by School Health Coordinator.
JOB GOAL
To provide nursing services that will ensure the highest level of health, advocating for the well-being of students, and encouraging students to be in class learning.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Service Delivery
* 1 Administer medications following local school and state policies.
* 2 Provide first aid, acute, and emergency care, to ill or injured students.
* 3 Review electronic health records, such as immunization for compliance, Florida Physical Exam, health screenings, significant medical history, etc., per school health medical records review sheet per state school health office. Request missing records from parent.
* 4 Enter updated data into electronic records.
* 5 Consult with students and parents concerning health problems or concerns.
* 6 Complete DOE and school health annual trainings.
* 7 Provide classroom health education for students.
* 8 Read work emails at a minimum of twice daily.
* 9 Conduct mandated screenings for scoliosis for grades KG, 1, 3, 6. Screenings to include: vision, hearing, BMI, and scoliosis
* 10 Adhere to safe clinic procedure, and adhere to the requirements listed on the Clinic review sheet per state school health office
*11 Maintain a current list of students with acute and/or chronic conditions, flagging emergent conditions in the electronic medical records.
*12 Maintain accurate records of all health clinic visits.
*13 Coordinate and provide assistance with mandated health programs and services and maintain appropriate documentation. Attend staff meetings, actively participating in team functions, and events.
*14 Maintain data collection for mandatory reporting records as outlined by DOE / DOH.
*15 Make home visits as needed.
*16 Assist School Health Coordinator, as requested.
*17 Maintain inventory or medical supplies and office supplies.
Inter / Intra-agency Communication and Delivery
Serve as a health liaison between home and school.
Participate in Exceptional Student Education staffing, if required.
Assist school office personnel with annual distribution and collection of current emergency contact information on all students.
Assist school personnel with completion of incident / accident reports.
Maintain a cooperative working relationship with appropriate governmental agencies.
Use effective communication strategies to interact with a variety of audiences.
Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
Employee Qualities / Responsibilities
Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
Maintain and ensure student confidentiality.
Maintain positive relationships with children, parents, school personnel and the public.
Follow attendance, punctuality, and appropriate dress rules.
Participate in workshops and training sessions as required.
Maintain current Florida Nursing License with mandatory CEU’s, CPR and First Aid certification.
System Support
Prepare and submit all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
Follow all School Board policies and school policies and procedures.
Exhibit the interpersonal skills necessary as an effective team member.
Demonstrate support for the School District and its goals and priorities.
Perform other incidental tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Medium Work: Exerting up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently and/or up to ten (10) pounds of force as needed to move objects.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the district’s approved compensation plan.
Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the district.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
