Job Summary
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) serves as the lead onsite advanced practice provider for our occupational health clinic in Radford, VA. This role combines direct clinical care with program support, medical surveillance, and collaboration with client stakeholders. Working at the top of licensure, the NP/PA independently evaluates and manages occupational injuries and illnesses, performs advanced assessments, conducts regulatory medical exams, and provides clinical leadership to ensure employee health, workplace safety, and compliance.
The provider functions autonomously when a physician is not onsite and collaborates closely with the WorkCare Consulting Medical Director (CMD), WorkCare support teams, and client partners.
Schedule: Monday – Friday 6:00am – 2:00pm; additional hours may be required as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Advanced Practice
- Independently assess, diagnose, and manage occupational injuries and illnesses.
- Conduct comprehensive histories and physical examinations.
- Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests and screenings.
- Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions within scope.
- Develop evidence-based treatment plans and oversee follow-up care.
- Provide expert consultation for complex or higher-acuity cases.
- Deliver advanced triage, stabilization, and emergency clinical decision-making.
- Serve as the lead onsite clinician when no physician is present, consulting with the CMD as needed.
Medical Surveillance & Regulatory Exams
- Perform OSHA-required and client-required medical examinations.
- Conduct respirator clearance evaluations, audiometry, PFTs, vision testing, immunizations, and TB screening.
- Interpret clinical findings and determine medical suitability for job tasks.
Case Management & Return-to-Work
- Lead clinical case management, including recovery monitoring and return-to-work planning.
- Determine work restrictions and modified duty recommendations.
- Collaborate with external specialists, workers’ compensation partners, and WorkCare’s Injury Care Program.
Client Partnership & Program Support
- Collaborate with EH&S teams to provide clinical insight into injury trends and prevention opportunities.
- Partner with WorkCare’s Prevention Services to reinforce safe work practices and deliver targeted health education.
- Provide ergonomic recommendations and employee health education (additional training required for ergonomic assessments).
- Participate in safety meetings, incident reviews, and planning discussions.
- Communicate professionally with client leadership, HR, EH&S, and WorkCare management in alignment with the WorkCare Communication Policy.
Clinic Operations & Leadership
- Ensure clinical compliance, documentation accuracy, and clinic readiness.
- Provide clinical guidance to RNs, LPNs, OHTs, or other onsite support staff.
- Maintain stocked medications, supplies, and emergency equipment.
- Document all encounters accurately in the EMR or other charting systems.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and state practice acts.
- Prepare clinical reports, injury trend analyses, and required client documentation.
- Performs additional duties and assumes additional responsibilities as identified by supervisor for the efficient operation of WorkCare.
