GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This position’s primary function is to process and translate to and from English and Spanish in spoken or written form and assist multiple department with clients presenting for Health Department services.
Public Health is a first responder agency for natural disasters (e.g. hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, winter storms), naturally occurring infectious disease outbreaks (e.g. influenza, SARS), technological hazards (hazardous materials releases, critical infrastructure disruptions), and terrorist incidents. This position, like all other positions within the Department may be required to participate in any emergency response activities as deemed necessary by the Health Director or his/her designee. Availability during emergencies and exercises is required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES PERFORMED
- Position will be trained to utilize the EMR for all aspects of the job as well as other applications as appropriate
- Assists in retrieving medical forms for clinic appointments
- Files medical forms as appropriate
- Answers incoming phone calls and making appointments
- Must be knowledgeable of all programs within the department to direct calls, clients, etc.
- Position will be cross-trained to register patients as well as other processes as related to the program area.
- Accurately and impartially interpret to and from English and Spanish
- Recognize and adhere to the importance of confidentiality
- Have a basic knowledge of cultural competency, role of the interpreter, and the ethics associated with being an interpreter
- Position will be asked to provide interpreting services to multiple departments within the Health Department
- Position will be asked to translate various forms and letters from English to Spanish as needed by the department
Recruitment Standards
The employee must be capable of establishing and maintaining effective communication and working relationships with staff, supervisors, and patients.
Must be flexible and be able to handle multiple tasks including time management while working with patients and staff. This position must be a person who has organizational skills and is people oriented.
Must have a working knowledge of computers, along with good data entry skills.
Completion of high school and at least 1 year of office/secretarial experience, and or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required.
Must be able to effectively communicate in both English and Spanish.
