JOB TITLE: Interpreter
DEPARTMENT: Interpretation and Language Services
PROGRAM: This position provides interpretation services for various program clients
REPORTS TO: Interpreter Coordinator
LOCATION: MICOP Offices, Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, and San Luis Obispo County
STATUS: Non Exempt
HOURS OF WORK: On Call, work hours vary depending on program needs
ABOUT MIXTECO INDIGENA COMMUNITY ORGANIZING PROJECT
Founded in 2001, Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) supports, organizes and empowers the indigenous migrant communities of California’s Central Coast through improved access to health and community resources, community organizing, language interpretation, education, direct assistance, cultural promotion, and our indigenous-led Radio Indígena community radio station. MICOP offers a fast-paced, multilingual and multicultural work environment dedicated to carrying out our mission.
Summary
The person in this position will provide interpretation services with the goal of bridging the language barrier between the indigenous communities and providers serving the community. Working in this role requires flexibility and availability to interpret when necessary. Interpreters will be called when their services are required, which may include evenings and weekends.
Responsibilities
Provide interpretation services to clients who need language assistance when working with social service providers.
Listen to information in one language and interpret into the client’s language.
Maintain confidentiality and discretion regarding clients’ information.
Provide the clients with approximate or exact/literal and clear translation without adding or taking out information.
Act as an interpreter when language barriers exist.
Prepare before a performance (by contacting the supervisor).
Communicate professionally with clients.
Be punctual to meetings where interpreting services are provided.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Fluent in any one of these languages: Zapotec, Mixtec, Triqui, Purépecha, Nahuatl, Spanish and English
Excellent writing skills in Spanish and/or English.
Communicate effectively and accurately with others.
Certificate of Interpreter Training- completion of 40 hours course.
Have reliable transportation.
Able to work remotely or and/or face-to-face depending on the needs of each case.
If working remotely, it is required to do so from a private environment.
Ability to navigate Microsoft Office, Google Apps and Drive, Internet browsing, Zoom and Google Meet and conference calls.
