Position Summary

The Orthodontic Assistant supports the orthodontist and clinical team by preparing patients and operatories, assisting with orthodontic procedures, maintaining sterilization and inventory standards, and delivering a highly positive patient experience. This role is ideal for someone who is clinically strong, detail-oriented, personable, and energized by a busy schedule.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare treatment rooms and patients for orthodontic visits.
• Assist the orthodontist chairside during procedures such as:
• Bonding/debonding brackets and attachments
• Wire changes and adjustments
• Taking impressions or digital scans
• Retainer delivery and patient instruction
• Invisalign/clear aligner support workflows
• Take high-quality intraoral photographs and X-rays as needed (per VA regulations).
• Provide excellent patient communication, including after-care and oral hygiene instructions.
• Maintain strict infection control and sterilization protocols.
• Stock rooms, track supplies, and alert leadership to low inventory.
• Support smooth clinical flow across multiple chairs / providers.
• Collaborate with front office and Treatment Coordinators to ensure a seamless visit.
• Contribute to a positive, team-first culture.

Required Skills and Optional Skills

Required Skills

• Orthodontic or dental assisting experience (minimum 1 year preferred).
• Strong chairside assisting fundamentals and clinical readiness.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced multi-chair environment.
• Excellent patient communication and customer service mindset.
• Dependable, punctual, and professional in appearance and conduct.
• Ability to follow clinical protocols with precision and consistency.
• Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn practice systems quickly.
• Current CPR/BLS certification (or willingness to obtain promptly).

Optional / Preferred Skills

• Direct orthodontic assisting experience (brackets, wires, aligners).
• Experience with digital scans (iTero/3Shape or similar).
• Familiarity with Ortho2 EDGE or other orthodontic PMS platforms.
• Radiology certification for Virginia (if applicable).
• Bilingual (Spanish a plus).
• Cross-training interest in clinical leadership or mentoring junior assistants.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Dental Assisting certification preferred but not mandatory with relevant experience.
• Ability to stand for long periods and perform repetitive fine-motor tasks.
• Calm, confident demeanor with children, teens, and adults.
