Position Summary

The Pediatric Dental Assistant plays a critical role in creating a positive, calm, and efficient visit for children and parents. You will support pediatric dentists chairside, help maintain smooth clinical flow, and reinforce our culture of fun, exceptional care. The ideal candidate is upbeat, clinically strong, organized, and naturally great with kids.

Key Responsibilities

• Create a welcoming, reassuring experience for children and parents before, during, and after care.
• Prepare operatories and ensure instruments/materials are ready for each visit.
• Chairside assist pediatric dentists during procedures, including:
• Exams, cleanings, fluoride, and preventive visits
• Sealants and restorative treatments
• Stainless steel crowns, pulpotomies, space maintainers
• Extractions and pediatric emergencies
• Sedation support workflows as applicable
• Take diagnostic X-rays and intraoral photos as prescribed (per Virginia regulations).
• Support child behavior guidance (tell-show-do, positive reinforcement, age-appropriate language).
• Provide clear post-op and home-care instructions to parents/guardians.
• Maintain strict infection control, sterilization, and operatory turnover standards.
• Stock rooms, monitor supplies, and alert leadership to low inventory.
• Assist with multi-chair/provider flow to keep the schedule on time.
• Coordinate closely with front office and orthodontic team for integrated family visits.
• Uphold HIPAA, safety protocols, and ICON clinical standards.

Required Skills and Optional Skills

Required Skills

• 1+ year dental assisting experience (pediatric strongly preferred).
• Comfort working with children of all ages; ability to build trust quickly.
• Strong chairside fundamentals and ability to anticipate provider needs.
• Excellent communication with parents and calm reassurance for nervous kids.
• High attention to detail and consistency following clinical protocols.
• Dependable, punctual, and professional.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, family practice environment.
• Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn practice systems quickly.
• Current CPR/BLS certification (or willingness to obtain promptly).

Optional / Preferred Skills

• Direct pediatric dental assisting background.
• Virginia radiology certification (or eligibility to obtain quickly).
• Experience with nitrous oxide monitoring and/or sedation cases.
• Familiarity with digital scanning or intraoral photography.
• Bilingual (Spanish a plus).
• Interest in growth toward Lead Assistant / Clinical Mentor roles.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Dental Assisting certification preferred but not mandatory with relevant experience.
• Physical ability to stand for extended periods and perform fine-motor clinical tasks.
• Natural warmth and patience with children, teens, and special-needs patients.
