Description

 

We are currently seeking a Project Manager to support utility forestry operations across diverse environments—from urban neighborhoods to remote forested areas. As a Project Manager, your "office" is the great outdoors, where you play a vital role in ensuring safe and reliable power delivery.

In this role, you will oversee field projects promote a culture of safety, ensure regulatory and contractual compliance and optimize vegetation management operations across client properties.  This field-based position is focused on meeting Client contract specifications and delivering high-quality service.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Work Planning & Oversight

  • Responsible for managing the planning of vegetation management work and auditing of completed trimming and clearing tasks.
  • Conduct QA/QC inspections to ensure compliance with contract specifications.
  • Monitor project progress and maintain positive public relations through effective oversight.
  • Attend scheduling meetings with utility program managers to stay up to date on all current construction timelines.

Field Operations

  • Attend pre-construction meetings with various stakeholders and act as the subject matter expert for all work related to land clearing and tree removal activities.
  • Inspect and document vegetation conditions at customer properties.
  • Travel safely to various work sites using a motor vehicle.
  • Support storm and emergency response activities as needed.

Safety & Compliance

  • Identify and report safety hazards, incidents, and potential risks.
  • Exhibit competency and understanding of special circumstances, including but not limited to, environmentally sensitive areas, endangered species, and state permit process.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and policies, including the Code of Safe Practices and Wildfire Preparedness Plan.

Customer & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Address and resolve customer concerns related to vegetation work.
  • Serve as the point of contact for any escalated customer or otherwise sensitive areas, such as federal lands.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients, contractors, landowners, and the public.

Administrative & Technical Support

  • Support the use and implementation of work management systems.
  • Operate forestry-related software and maintain accurate digital records.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support project goals and operational efficiency.

WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE:

  • Minimum 2 years as a NIPSCO Utility Arborist or Work Planner
  • ISA Arborist Certification or be able to obtain within 6 months of employment
  • Bachelor’s or associate degree in forestry, Environmental Science or related field or 8 years of utility line clearance experience.
  • Ability to read maps, identify tree species, and assess vegetation work.
  • Knowledge of tree growth, injury response, and hazard conditions.
  • Strong customer focus and communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational abilities.
  • Proficient in MS Office, SharePoint, OneDrive, GIS, and iPad-based systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record required.

WHAT WOULD BE AMAZING TO HAVE:

  • Previous experience with vegetation removal, utility line clearance, and utility vegetation methods and equipment
  • Prior experience with GIS software/technology
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

Working Environment

Work with a team and alone; primarily in an outdoor field environment and/or low light conditions; foot patrol of energy corridors in the vicinity of power lines and/or pipelines; remote locations as well as urban, city environment; physical demands and travel from site to site, including: walking/hiking on various surfaces including flat, dry, wet, slippery, rocky, sandy, uneven, rough, unstable, steep terrain, hills and slopes, dense vegetation; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, and all types of weather extremes including snow, ice, fog, humidity, and low and high temperature conditions; exposure to hazardous traffic conditions, domestic and wild animals, insects, and poisonous plants. Other working conditions may include: in a vehicle or limited time in an indoor office.

Physical

The employee must have sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment; to walk up to 10 miles per day, stand, sit, and operate a motor vehicle for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, run, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp and make repetitive hand, arm and shoulder movement in the performance of daily duties (e.g., forcefully beat down brush); carry, push and/or pull light to heavy amounts of weight, frequently lift up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lift up to 60 lbs. (sandbags); to operate assigned equipment and vehicles; ability to verbally communicate to exchange information with public; ability to see and hear in normal range with or without correction; operate assigned field equipment, including handheld computer, range finder, fyrake, water backpack, shovel, and traffic cone.
