Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs routine professional nursing services for inmates housed in the Beaver County Jail and works with physicians on the day to day management of the medical aspect of the jail facility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Under the supervision of the Sheriff, Chief Deputy, and Jail Commander and under the direction of the attending physician

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Provides close to general supervision to a Licensed Practical Nurse on a case by case basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assists the Doctor on duty when visiting inmates, consults with physicians on medical matters.

Identifies physical, social and emotional health needs by using health and social histories; conducts physical examinations and laboratory tests as needed; develops treatment plans for patients.

Obtains inmates medical history and is responsible for the medication and inmate medical records and updates; prepares daily medications; distributes prescribed medications; follows up to determine effects of medication; provides treatment for minor ailments not requiring prescription or physician review; prepares medical charts; records treatments; insures confidentiality of inmate medical records. Documents medical treatment and procedures.

Evaluates nutritional adequacy and necessary dietary requirements; evaluates medical/dental requests; sets up required dental appointments; counsels and evaluates minor emotional emergencies; evaluates inmates for Mental Health Department; obtains mental health counselors as required.

Schedules inmate appointments for transportation to outside medical care requiring medical stability; coordinates changes in living quarters for medical reasons.

Will document medical treatment and is responsible for third party billings and procedures for reimbursable services.

Performs related duties as required.


Requirements

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Education and Experience:
  2. Graduation from college with a bachelor’s degree in nursing;

AND

  1. Two (2) years of experience performing above or related duties;

OR

  1. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Working knowledge of general nursing theory and practice; working knowledge of medication, dosage, and side effects; some knowledge of normal and abnormal behavior; jail policy and procedures and is responsible for upgrades of medical care policies; communicable and transmitted diseases encountered in corrections facilities.Registered Nurse, page 2Skill in interpersonal communications and cooperative problem-solving. Ability to Ability to provide skilled nursing care; ability to set priorities and make judgements regarding case load; ability to recognize community health needs and concerns of patients and to maintain constructive health care relationships; ability to identify dangers involved with handling inmates; ability to adjust and cope with emergency situations; ability to restrain unruly inmates with assistance; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; must have the ability to work well with others.

  1. Special Qualifications:

Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah which includes being State Board certified.Must be CPR certified and IV certification is preferred.Must have a valid Utah Driver’s License. Rotating shift work.Possibility for work on-call.Up to 40 hours a week.

  1. Work Environment:

Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Talking, hearing and seeing essential to the performance of the job. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, discriminating thinking. Work requires daily contact with inmates within the jail facility.
