JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of Bookstore Management, the Bookstore Retail Associate I assists customers by performing job duties throughout the various Bookstore Retail Services locations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Provide excellent guest service at all times
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of store products and services
  3. Assist customers in all aspects of service fulfillment
  4. Cross-train and work in all areas of stores as needed
  5. Perform sales support functions related to POS and e-commerce procedures
  6. General housekeeping, stocking, organizing, pricing and merchandising duties
  7. Use computerized software to look up stock information and operate a cash register
  8. Receive, verify, sort and distribute goods
  9. Make on-campus deliveries and represent the University Bookstore and other Retail Services locations at campus events
  10. Assist with clerical duties, research and special projects
  11. Answer telephone calls and emails, follow-up with appropriate personnel as needed
  12. Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job

Work Schedule

Work shifts are scheduled during regular University Bookstore operating hours, which are generally Monday through Thursday from 7:00am to 7:30pm; Friday 7:00am to 5:00pm, and Saturday 10:00am to 4:30pm with varied shifts that include mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Work schedules align with the CSULB Academic Calendar, with peak activity during academic semesters and reduced hours during academic breaks, based on operational needs. The employee must provide a minimum of 12 hours of availability during academic semesters; however actual hours assigned may vary. 

Physical Demands

The employee will frequently need to move boxes, unpack inventory and stock shelves with merchandise. The employee must frequently be able to lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds. There will be long periods of time standing on their feet and moving around in a large building, and the employee will be occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, bend at the waist, push or pull, reach above shoulder level, stoop, and kneel. Some use of ladders to ascend/descend is occasionally required. 

Work Environment

employee is typically in a climate controlled indoor environment within a large retail location and occasionally has movement throughout the warehouse and outdoors, with exposure to weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to noisy. Occasionally the work environment will have high customer traffic at the beginning of each new semester, during sales, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or experience

The employee must be a current and active CSULB student enrolled in a minimum of 6 units. Previous retail, customer service, or warehouse experience is preferred, but not required.

There are no required certificates, licenses, or registrations for this position. 

Knowledge and Abilities

The employee must demonstrate proficiency in both written and verbal communication in English. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, along with a commitment to providing excellent customer service. The employee must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. The ability to understand and comply with University and Beach Shops policies and procedures is required.
