Saw Operator Job Description

(Steel Fabrication / Manufacturing Environment)

Position Summary

The Saw Operator is responsible for safely setting up and operating industrial saw equipment to cut various steel materials including beams, tubing, pipe, angle, channel, plate, and other structural or fabricated materials according to production specifications. This position requires attention to detail, accuracy in measurement, and the ability to maintain quality and productivity standards in a manufacturing environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate band saws, cold saws, or other cutting equipment used in steel fabrication.
  • Read and interpret work orders, cut lists. Input production into order software.
  • Measure and mark material accurately using tape measures, squares, and other measuring tools.
  • Cut steel materials to specified dimensions while maintaining quality standards and tolerances.
  • Load, position, and secure steel material onto saw equipment using overhead cranes, forklifts, or material handling equipment as needed.
  • Inspect materials before and after cutting for defects, accuracy, and quality.
  • Perform routine machine adjustments and basic preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain proper blade condition and replace saw blades when necessary.
  • Keep work area clean, organized, and free of safety hazards.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, PPE requirements, and OSHA regulations.
  • Accurately record production quantities and material usage.
  • Work closely with supervisors and production personnel to meet scheduling and production goals.
  • Assist in other warehouse duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous manufacturing, steel fabrication, or saw operating experience preferred.
  • Ability to read a tape measure accurately.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and production documents preferred.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Forklift and overhead crane experience preferred or willingness to train.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive movements.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
