Job Title:  School Age Assistant Teacher Status: Part-Time/Non-Exempt

Department: Childcare Reports to:  SAGE Director

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Assist with daily activities (snack preparation, organized physical activities, arts & crafts projects, etc.).

2. Promotes feelings of mutual respect, acceptance, and appreciation among youth and adults.

3. Creates a safe environment that helps all youth feel welcome and respected.

4. Assist in maintenance of a clean facility.

5. Employs positive behavior guidance strategies that provide youth with increased self-awareness and self-control.

6. Attend mandatory meetings and training.

7. Arrive at work on time and clock in properly.

8. Maintain a consistent attendance record.

9. Notify the Head Teacher and Director if it is necessary to be absent from scheduled hours.

10. Actively participate in all activities.

11. Interacts with youth in a positive, warm and nurturing manner.

12. Understands and maintains personal boundaries with youth (e.g., physical space, time, etc.).

13. Develops and maintains open, friendly, cooperative, and respectful relationships with families and other partners.

14. Encourages an open exchange of ideas.

15. Uses effective listening and verbal skills, including positive body language and tone of voice.

16. All other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must be at least 16 years of age.

2. Must have experience working with children ages 5-10.

3. Must meet all State of Connecticut licensing requirements (negative TB test, good health report, First Aid / CPR certification).

4. Must have the ability and desire to work with children.

Summary

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Assist the Head Teacher in carrying out the daily curriculum for the school age program.
