Job Description

Job Title: Security Guard / Member Experience Associate
Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt (35 hours per week)

Schedule: Multiple shifts available, including:

Weekdays (Monday–Friday):

  • Morning Shift: 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Evening Shift: 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Schedules may vary based on operational needs, facility coverage, and staffing requirements.

Pay Rate: $18 per hour
Reports To: Director of Operations & External Engagement (with coordination with Member Experience Leadership)
Department: Operations


Position Summary

The Security Guard / Member Experience Associate is a security-first frontline role responsible for maintaining a safe, orderly, and well-monitored facility at the YMCA of Yonkers.

This position serves as the primary licensed security presence at the Welcome Center and throughout the building while working alongside a dedicated Member Experience Associate. As part of the YMCA’s two-person front desk coverage model, this role ensures that security oversight remains continuous while member services continue uninterrupted.

The role places primary emphasis on facility security, safety monitoring, and incident prevention, with secondary responsibilities supporting a welcoming and respectful member experience.

Our Front Desk Strategy

The YMCA of Yonkers staffs two employees at the front desk at all times:

  • Security Guard / Member Experience Associate (this role): Primary responsibility for safety, access control, policy enforcement, and incident response.
  • Member Experience Associate: Primary responsibility for memberships, transactions, tours, and service delivery.

This structure ensures that safety is never compromised while members continue to receive attentive, welcoming service.


Essential Functions

Primary Responsibilities – Security & Safety

  • Serve as the primary licensed security guard for the YMCA facility.
  • Maintain a visible security presence at the Welcome Center and throughout the building.
  • Conduct documented security rounds of the entire facility at least once per hour, including:
    • Entrances and exits
    • Locker rooms and corridors
    • Program and activity spaces
    • Residential floors
    • Stairwells and restricted-access areas (as applicable)
  • Monitor for safety hazards, unauthorized access, suspicious activity, or policy violations during each round.
  • Ensure doors, access points, and secured areas are properly controlled and monitored.
  • Enforce YMCA policies, membership access rules, and guest procedures respectfully and consistently.
  • Respond promptly to incidents, disturbances, or emergencies.
  • De-escalate conflicts calmly and professionally using trauma-informed and respectful practices.
  • Coordinate with YMCA leadership and emergency responders as needed.
  • Complete incident reports and hourly security round logs accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Support emergency response procedures, including evacuations, medical incidents, and lockdown protocols.
  • Maintain heightened situational awareness during peak hours, youth programming, and special events.

Secondary Responsibilities – Member Experience Support

  • Provide a professional, welcoming, and respectful presence to all members, guests, and visitors entering the YMCA, while maintaining a security-focused mindset.
  • Support Welcome Center operations in coordination with the on-duty Member Experience Associate, particularly during high-traffic periods, peak program hours, or special events.
  • Assist with basic member check-in flow, access verification, and wayfinding to ensure smooth front desk operations.
  • Help maintain an organized, professional, and safe front desk and lobby environment at all times.
  • Provide general information regarding YMCA programs, schedules, facility use, and expectations for member conduct, referring membership transactions and complex inquiries to Membership staff.
  • Observe member interactions and flag concerns, service issues, or safety-related matters to Operations or Membership leadership as appropriate.
  • Promote YMCA programs, events, and community initiatives through positive member interactions.
  • Model and reinforce the YMCA’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in all interactions.
  • Champion a welcoming and inclusive environment by modeling the YMCA’s “Most Welcoming Place” and “Listen First” practices.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalency required; some college preferred.
  • Current New York State Security Guard License required, including:
    • 8-hour Pre-Assignment Training
    • 16-hour On-the-Job Training
  • Minimum of 1 year of security, law enforcement, or related experience preferred.
  • Experience in community-based or public-access facilities strongly preferred.
  • Ability to remain calm, observant, and professional in dynamic environments.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days).
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods.
  • Regular movement throughout a multi-area facility.
  • Occasional lifting or movement of up to 25 pounds.
  • Indoor, community-centered environment with frequent public interaction.
