Overview

The Security Officer performs security duties at designated locations, ensuring the safety and security of staff, visitors, and property. Responsibilities include enforcing procedural rules, maintaining security and safety for assigned areas, monitoring security equipment, and conducting area patrols. Additional duties involve managing access to facilities, providing information and directions, maintaining logs and records, and reporting security or maintenance issues to the appropriate authorities. Security Officers may also be responsible for lost-and-found duties, completing detailed activity and incident reports, and performing other assigned tasks. Training, including bicycle certification, is required for onboarding.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to provide excellent customer service through strong verbal and written communication skills, including writing detailed reports.
2. Demonstrated strong active listening skills, including the ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points
being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
3. Security Officers provide essential functions and are required to work in all situations, including but not limited to emergencies, inclement weather and/or University closings. Mandatory order-in may occur.
4. Ability to identify potential risks and determine appropriate actions.
5. Demonstrated proficiency with computer technology pertaining to email, word documents and other basic software in addition to having the ability to professionally transmit and monitor radio communications.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.
2. Customer service experience and knowledge of public safety procedures and techniques.
3. Valid First-Aid/CPR/AED certification.
4. Two years of experience in security, law enforcement, military police, emergency response, or customer service.
5. Proficiency with computer technology, including email, word processing, and radio communications.

Job Description

1. Enforces procedural rules and regulations. Ensures the personal safety of staff, visitors, and property. Maintains security and safety for assigned area. Maintains working knowledge of the locations of various departments, buildings, access routes and admitting requirements.
2. May operate and monitor security control panels alarms, and related security equipment to provide area and visitor surveillance. Patrols assigned area including buildings, indoor and outdoor common areas, garages and other parking areas. Checks for suspicious occurrences, notifying appropriate authorities.
3. Responds to and investigates situations reported to Central Alarm Station.   Calls Campus Police or other authorities to investigate suspicious activities or security violations that require intervention.
4. Checks ID cards of persons entering the facility. Refuses to admit persons who cannot show either proper authorization or cause for being admitted. Provides information and directions.
5. Explains rules and regulations. Opens and closes facilities as required, ensuring that users have left the premises. Reports security and general maintenance problems to the proper authorities.
6.  May be responsible for Lost-And-Found. Maintains logs and records of occurrences, completes necessary paperwork, and may use computer terminal or mobile device to record activity and input and retrieve data.
7. Strong writing skills to write detailed daily activity and incident reports using computers, mobile devices or written reports.
8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

High school level education or equivalent and two years of experience in security, law enforcement, military police, emergency response or customer service; or an Associate’s degree and two years of experience.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

State of Connecticut License for Security Officer (Guard Card). Valid driver's license.
Successfully complete a Public Safety bicycle certification course and operate a bicycle in an urban setting during probationary period (90 working days or 180 calendar days).

Physical Requirements

1.    Ability to climb stairs and endure extended periods of walking, standing, sitting.
2.    Ability to maintain physical mobility ensuring constant awareness of environmental surroundings.
3.    Ability to lift and/or move up to 30 lbs.
4.    Ability to drive a motor vehicle for extended periods of time.
5.    Ability to ride a bicycle for extended periods of time, operate a bicycle in an urban setting, and pass IPMBA (International Police Mountain Bike Association) certification course.
