The Selective Demolition Operator is responsible for safely operating equipment, tools, and specialized demolition attachments to perform precision demolition activities within occupied, partially occupied, and structurally sensitive environments. This role removes designated building components while protecting adjacent structures, utilities, finishes, and ongoing operations. The Selective Demolition Operator works closely with project leadership, field personnel, and building stakeholders to execute demolition activities safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements.

 

The Selective Demolition Operator must possess strong equipment operation skills, situational awareness, and knowledge of demolition methods, building systems, utility identification, dust control, and demolition sequencing. This position plays a critical role in maintaining safety, quality, and productivity while minimizing disruption to surrounding operations and preserving existing conditions.

 

 

TOTAL COMPENSATION

$26.83 to $50.63 per hour

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Equipment Operation

  • Safely operate mini excavators, compact track loaders, skid steers, hydraulic breakers, broncos, dingoes, plasma cutters, and other equipment used in selective demolition operations.
  • Perform precision demolition activities while protecting adjacent structures, systems, and finishes.
  • Conduct pre-operational inspections and routine equipment maintenance checks.
  • Identify and report equipment deficiencies or maintenance concerns.

 

Selective Demolition Activities

  • Remove interior and exterior building components in accordance with demolition plans and project requirements.
  • Demolish walls, ceilings, flooring systems, concrete, structural components, mechanical systems, and architectural finishes as directed.
  • Execute demolition activities in occupied facilities while minimizing impacts to building occupants and operations.
  • Follow established demolition sequencing and work plans.
  • Assist with material sorting, recycling, salvage, and debris management efforts.
  • Maintain awareness of structural conditions and immediately report concerns or unforeseen conditions.

 

Safety and Compliance

  • Comply with all Company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and project-specific safety requirements.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings, job hazard analyses, and pre-task planning activities.
  • Identify and mitigate hazards associated with demolition activities.
  • Utilize proper dust suppression, containment, and environmental control measures.
  • Maintain awareness of potential asbestos, lead, silica, mold, and other environmental hazards.
  • Exercise Stop Work Authority when unsafe conditions exist.

 

Utility and Existing Condition Protection

  • Verify utility locations, disconnects, and protection requirements prior to commencing work.
  • Protect active utilities, occupied spaces, and existing building systems.
  • Maintain awareness of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire protection, and communication systems.
  • Assist with implementation of temporary protections and containment systems.

 

Teamwork and Communication

  • Coordinate daily activities with Foremen, Superintendents, Laborers, and other project team members.
  • Communicate equipment needs, site conditions, and operational concerns to project leadership.
  • Assist in training and mentoring less experienced operators and laborers.
  • Maintain professional interactions with clients, building occupants, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
  • Assist with debris removal, material staging, and site logistics.
  • Secure equipment, tools, and work areas at the end of each shift.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of selective demolition methods, techniques, and sequencing.
  • Knowledge of building construction, structural systems, and demolition practices.
  • Ability to safely operate multiple types of construction and demolition equipment.
  • Knowledge of demolition attachments and their appropriate applications.
  • Understanding of utility identification and protection requirements.
  • Familiarity with dust control, containment, and environmental compliance practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, drawings, and demolition layouts.
  • Strong situational awareness and hazard recognition skills.
  • Ability to work safely in occupied and operational facilities.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing site conditions and project requirements.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of construction, demolition, or equipment operation experience.
  • Experience operating mini excavators, skid steers, compact track loaders, or similar equipment.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment and ongoing drug and alcohol testing requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing interior selective demolition in commercial, healthcare, industrial, or educational environments.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Competent Person training.
  • Experience working around occupied facilities.
  • Experience with structural demolition attachments and specialized demolition equipment.
  • Knowledge of environmental controls and regulated materials awareness.
  • Ability to pass criminal and personal background checks to work in sensitive environments such as schools and airports preferred but not required.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequently stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, crouch, and reach.
  • Regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift greater weights with assistance.
  • Work in varying indoor and outdoor environments, including dust, noise, vibration, and changing weather conditions.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and around active construction operations.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment for extended periods.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Primarily indoor work within existing structures, including confined spaces, partially occupied buildings, and areas with limited ventilation.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, and varying interior conditions requiring consistent use of PPE and adherence to safety protocols.
