About the Department

Reporting to the Associate Controller, the Senior Accountant – Restricted Funds Accounting is responsible for daily financial accounting and reporting activities of Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in support of post award grants management as well as supporting over all financial reporting accordance with GAAP and the application of GASB and FASB standards.

Position Duties

  • Provide day-to-day support for the functions associated with general accounting in support of the post award grants accounting department as well and state memorandums of understanding.
  • Activities as a member of the Controller’s Office in this capacity may include: 
    • responsible for updating the general ledger on a daily basis 
    • responsible for review of monthly transaction activity and preparation or review of entries to the general ledger
    • reconcile general ledger accounts in particular those associated with restricted funds
    • responsible for proper implementation of new GASB pronouncements under the direction of the Associate Controller
  • Under the direction of the Associate Controller and/or the Grants Manager, responsible for:
    • periodic draws of federal funds
    • assisting with preparation and review of the University’s Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA)
    • preparation of various organizational reports such as the NSF Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) report amongst many others
    • assist with cost share calculations and entries on a monthly basis
    • preparation of year-end audit work papers
    • federal sub-award filings
  • Provide necessary fiscal assistance to Grants Accounting department personnel, Controller’s Office as a whole, and the campus community. Field questions and provide training related to restricted fund accounting.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following Degree is required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 
The following Degree is preferred:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
The following Experience is required: 
  • 3 years accounting or auditing experience
The following Licensure, Certifications, or Registration is preferred:
  • Certified Public Accountant

Other Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Solid working knowledge of GAAP, FASB, and GASB principles as well as fund accounting and the basics of taxation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • High level of demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy
  • Self-starter and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong financial analysis skills
  • Ability to analyze and problem solve
  • Strong computer skills, specifically as it relates to Microsoft Office products
  • Working knowledge of complex financial ERP systems as well as the various business processes and procedures related to them
