About the Department

Individuals working as Senior Recreation Leaders perform a variety of tasks associated with developing and implementing recreational programs and managing recreational facilities. Employees in this job class are responsible for developing and coordinating recreation programs, activities and special events for diverse groups of patrons. They regularly inspect the facilities, grounds, and equipment to ensure the recreation center is properly maintained. Additionally, they spend time developing relationships with community members to help market and promote the facilities' activities.  This position will be tasked with restarting the outdoor track and recreation runners programs and assisting in the creation of a fall youth cross country program.  This position will also assist with other recreation sports programs as needed. 

Position Duties

  • Develops and coordinates recreational programs/activities and/or special events for various groups (e.g., recreation center patrons, seniors, youth, etc.) by planning and scheduling the activities in conjunction with existing programs and events.
  • Develops, participates, and coordinates youth, adults, and/or seniors’ recreational sports leagues by planning and overseeing the implementation of the league.
     Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, and expenditure reports, analyzing financial data, and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.
  • Ensures the maintenance and upkeep of the recreation center building, the grounds surrounding the recreation center, and the supplies and equipment used in the recreation center by inspecting facilities and equipment and ensuring needed maintenance is performed.
  • Documents information and maintains records and files regarding recreation center activities and programs.
  • Develops marketing/advertising programs and activities of the recreation center in order to make the community aware of the various programs and events hosted by the recreation center.
  • Communicates with citizens of Trussville about up-and-coming programs.  
  • Employee must market the programs that they are coordinating and those programs the department runs. 
  • Develops work schedules for part-time employees that are assigned to help with their programs.
  • Develops the game and practice schedules for the programs that they coordinate. This includes making sure there are enough facilities requested and blocked off to run their programs. 
  • Monitoring registration of the programs.
  • Recruitment of coaches for the programs.
  • Recommending evaluation practices for the programs that they coordinate.  
  • Employee may have to conduct training classes for officials and scorekeepers.  
  • Employee may have to officiate a game.
  • Employee will have to evaluate and adjust the rules of the games to fit the goals and objectives of the department.
  • Updating records of the teams for quick referencing.  
  • Answering phone calls, emails, and face-to-face situations with the participants in the department’s programs. 
  • Have a strong knowledge of the rules for all sports that the department coordinates. 
  • Make recommendations to supervisors about equipment needed to run the programs. 
  • Ability to fill in as pool manager when needed. 

Minimum Qualifications

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Driver's license.
  • Experience assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of recreation programs and activities (e.g., coaching teams, officiating games, coordinating recreational sports leagues, summer camp programs, aquatic programs and special events, senior citizen programs/activities).
  • Experience coordinating with volunteers and/or part-time employees involved in recreational programs/activities (e.g., recruiting/identifying volunteers, scheduling volunteers, directing work of volunteers/part-time employees).
  • Experience using computer software to create marketing materials for recreational programs/activities, creating game schedules for sports leagues, documenting employee/volunteer work schedules, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • First Aid/CPR Certification.
  • Certified Pool Operator.
  • Associate's degree or higher in Sports and Recreation Management, Parks and Recreation Management, Physical Education, or a highly related field.
  • Experience setting up playfields for a variety of sports (e.g., lining fields for football, baseball, etc.).
  • Experience working in a pool setting.

Other Qualifications

Physical Demands
Job involves significant and concerted physical exertion required for regular prolonged periods of walking, running, stooping, kneeling, crouching, etc.

Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in employer-owned facilities such as community civic centers, recreation centers, etc. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc. as well as equipment related to recreational activities and programs.
