THE POSITION: The Ventura County Health Care Agency (HCA) is seeking an experienced and dedicated Senior Registered Nurse to join the Telemetry & Oncology Department at Ventura County Medical Center. Under general direction and following established medically approved policies and procedures, the Senior Registered Nurse implements specialized skilled nursing processes and provides advanced patient care to individuals requiring continuous cardiac monitoring and treatment, administering and overseeing oncology treatments and supportive therapies, and responding to changes in patient condition. The ideal candidate will serve as a clinical resource and mentor to nursing staff, promote quality patient outcomes, support quality improvement initiatives, and contribute to the delivery of exceptional healthcare services in a fast-paced acute care environment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Senior Registered Nurse-Hospital is distinguished from other staff nursing classifications in that incumbents demonstrate advanced competency skills reflecting specialized knowledge specific to the assigned hospital unit; participate in performance improvement processes; and provide technical direction. Incumbents are expected to work at the full scope of their licensure/specialty area with a decreasing amount of supervision commensurate with their experience.
EDUCATION/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.

PAYROLL TITLE: Senior Registered Nurse-Hospital
Senior Registered Nurse-Hospital is represented by the California Nurses' Association (CNA) and is eligible for overtime compensation. Salary placement will be determined according to the current CNA memorandum of agreement.
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies. There is currently one (1) Regular vacancy.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Implements nursing processes for telemetry & oncology patients with complex cardiovascular, oncologic and medical conditions including assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient response; revises plans as needed;
- Monitors, interprets, and responds to cardiac rhythms and telemetry data, promptly identifying and intervening in cases of significant dysrhythmia or changes in patient condition;
- Administers and monitors the effects of cardiovascular medications and therapies;
- Administer and monitor chemotherapy and other oncology-related treatments in accordance with established protocols, physician orders, and safety standards;
- Recognizes, assesses, and initiates appropriate interventions for chemotherapy-related complications, infusion reactions, oncologic emergencies, and treatment-related adverse effects; promptly communicates significant changes in patient condition to the healthcare team;
- Administers basic and advanced competency nursing care in accordance with VCMC/SPH policies and procedures and Patient Bill of Rights;
- Provides direction to others regarding complex health and patient problems;
- Provides patient and staff education including the coordination of educational programs;
- Participates in hospital and/or nursing administration care committee;
- Reviews, identifies, reports, and corrects deficiencies in practices, products, or equipment as necessary;
- Develops, implements and documents performance improvement processes;
- Recognizes problem situations and takes appropriate steps leading to correction;
- Coordinates patient care conferences;
- Serves as a preceptor for new graduates, re-entry nurses, etc.; and
- Performs other related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
These are entrance requirements to the examination process and ensure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
DEPARTMENT/AGENCY SERVICE: Currently working as a Regular employee for the County of Ventura Health Care Agency. NOTE: A Regular employee is an employee who holds an allocated full-time or part-time position in the County budget excluding (but not limited to) extra help or intermittent employees, provisional appointees, enrollees in training programs, and/or independent contractors.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE
Requires two (2) years of full-time professional registered nursing experience, including at least one (1) year of full-time experience in Telemetry and at least one (1) year of full-time experience in Oncology.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS- Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California.
- Must possess a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by the first day of employment and maintain it thereafter.
- Must possess a current, valid Advanced Life Support (ACLS) certification by the first day of employment and maintain it thereafter.
- Must possess a current, valid National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification within three (3) months of hire and maintain it thereafter.
- Must possess a current, valid Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain it thereafter.
- Must pass a basic cardiac dysrhythmia competency test within three (3) months of hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Comprehensive knowledge of:- the principles, practices, and techniques used in advanced nursing care of telemetry and oncology patients;
- cardiac electrophysiology and telemetry monitoring systems;
- indications, actions, and adverse effects of commonly administered cardiovascular medications;
- emergency interventions for cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and other cardiovascular emergencies;
- administration and monitoring of chemotherapy and other cancer-related treatments, including their indications, actions, adverse effects, and safe handling requirements;
- signs, symptoms, and emergency interventions associated with chemotherapy-related complications, infusion reactions, oncologic emergencies, and treatment-related adverse effects;
Working knowledge of:- performance improvement processes;
- hospital based/nursing committee practices;
- patient and staff education methods.
Working ability to:- accurately interpret cardiac rhythms and identify significant dysrhythmias;
- assess, prioritize, and respond appropriately to changes in patient cardiac status;
- operate telemetry monitoring equipment and troubleshoot monitoring issues;
- administer chemotherapy and other oncology-related therapies in accordance with established protocols and safety standards;
- recognize and respond appropriately to infusion reactions, oncologic emergencies, and adverse treatment effects;
- provide direction to others;
- self-direct continuing education needs;
- provide a positive role model and public image;
- work proficiently in emergency and/or stressful situations;
- maintain confidentiality of patient/client information;
- effectively establish and maintain working relationships with medical staff, co-workers, patients and the public;
- communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
