Sheet Metal Welder/Industrial Worker
The Sheet Metal Welder is responsible for fabricating, fitting, and welding sheet metal components used in industrial, commercial, and construction applications. This position requires the ability to read blueprints, operate welding and fabrication equipment, and produce high-quality welds that meet company and industry standards. The Sheet Metal Welder works safely and efficiently while ensuring projects are completed accurately and on schedule.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and work orders.
- Measure, cut, form, fit, and assemble sheet metal components.
- Perform MIG and TIG on light gauge stainless steel (18ga – 24ga) and carbon steel materials.
- Fabricate ductwork, fittings, equipment housings, supports, and custom sheet metal products.
- Inspect welds and finished products for quality, accuracy, and compliance with specifications.
- Operate fabrication equipment including shears, brakes, rollers, presses, plasma cutters, and grinders.
- Maintain welding equipment, tools, and work areas in safe operating condition.
- Follow all OSHA, company, and site-specific safety requirements.
- Collaborate with supervisors, foremen, and team members to meet production goals.
- Troubleshoot fabrication and welding issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Complete required documentation related to production, inspections, and safety.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year of sheet metal welding and fabrication experience.
- Proficiency in MIG and TIG welding processes. Notably 16ga – 24ga stainless steel.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and fabrication layouts.
- Strong understanding of welding symbols, measurements, and tolerances.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment.
- Knowledge of sheet metal materials, fabrication techniques, and welding best practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a welding apprenticeship or technical training program.
- AWS welding certifications or equivalent credentials.
- Experience in industrial manufacturing or commercial construction.
- Forklift, aerial lift, or rigging certifications.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work in awkward positions for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination required.
- Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, and noise.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Work Environment
- Fabrication shop environment.
- Exposure to welding fumes, sparks, noise, and moving machinery.
- Occasional overtime and weekend work may be needed to meet project schedules.
