Job Description

About the Department

This is a full-time, hourly position reporting to the Superintendent, Area Supervisor, Crew Leader, or designee.  The position performs skilled work installing, repairing, cleaning, and fabricating traffic control devices.
 

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
 

  1. Installs, repairs, and cleans signs.
  2. Fabricates (manual and computerized) new signs.
  3. Performs sign inspection in assessing general condition.
  4. Performs road marking inspection and installation.
  5. Places road closure barricades; installs and maintains barricades.
  6. Maintains equipment and tools.  Maintains sign shop.
  7. Set-up and transport message and arrow boards and helps to establish MOT work zones.
  8. May be required to assist with emergency support functions (ESF) in the EOC during emergencies or other related emergency duties.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
 

  1. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to work traffic control.
  2. Knowledge of manual on uniform traffic control devices and the standard highway signs handbook.
  3. Knowledge of the procedures and practices of installing and maintaining traffic control devices.
  4. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  5. Ability to do mathematical computations.
  6. Ability to inspect thermoplastic and paint road markings.
  7. Ability to identify safety deficiencies.
  8. Ability to complete work orders, time, and equipment logs.
  9. Ability to generate and assemble traffic signs manually or via computer.
  10. Skill in the use of common hand tools.
  11. Proficiency in reading and writing in the English language.
  12. Skill in driving motor vehicle with trailer.
  13. Skill in the use of personal computers with ability to access, input, and retrieve information.
  14. Ability to perform physical work out of doors, under adverse weather conditions.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
 
  1. High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  2. Two (2) years experience in signs and marking field.
 
(A comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be substituted for the above minimum qualifications.)
 
LICENSE, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS
 
  1. Ability to possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
  2. IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control and Safety Certification.
  3. Level I and II I.M.S.A. certification for Signs and Markings or must be able to obtain within one (1) year of hire date.
 
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
 
  1. Heavy (45 pounds and over) lifting and carrying.
  2. Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
  3. Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
  4. Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
  5. Reaching, throwing, climbing, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping.
  6. Driving.
 
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
 
  1. Works outside in various weather conditions with dust, fumes, gases, chemicals, solvents, and uneven surfaces.
  2. In or with moving vehicles and traffic.
  3. Heights (up to 10 feet).
  4. Below ground level.

ANNUAL (VACATION) LEAVE –  All regular full-time employees assigned to a 37.50 work week will earn 90 hours to 150 hours, depending on classification and length of service.  All regular full-time employees assigned to a 40 hour work week will earn 96 hours to 160 hours, depending on classification and length of service.  Note: Leave accruals may differ for bargaining unit employees.

SICK LEAVE – All regular full-time employees will earn sick leave at a rate of 13 days per year.  Regular part time employees will accrue sick leave on a pro-rata basis. Note: Leave accruals may differ for bargaining unit employees.
