Job Description

Mandate:

The School of Medical Sciences (SMS) Operations Manager oversees the day-to-day administrative, operational, and technical activities of the School, and serves as the main point of contact for the faculty, staff, and students with reference to UVic central administration. The Operations Manager works closely with the Academic Head and the Director of Administration and completes UVic reports relating the research and educational initiatives of the School.

Objectives:

  • The Operations Manager is responsible for the HR and finance administration and operational management of School staff and provides oversight to relevant processes and procedures for the team and for the laboratories. 
  • The Operations Manager oversees Laboratory and study spaces safety, facilities management, and security needs, as well as manages core equipment in the laboratory spaces, including coordinating training on core equipment. 
  • Some flexible hours may be required for meetings or further training. This position requires the handling of compresses gases and the coordination of other large deliveries in alignment with on campus OHSE provided training. 

This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree plus three years of relevant experience.  An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

  • Ability to collaborate, build and maintain positive relationships with diverse individuals and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing budgets, forecasting for future needs, working with financial systems and other accounting, and purchasing procedures is preferred. 
  • Understanding or experience working in a laboratory environment is an asset.
  • Understanding graduate studies or experience working with graduate students is an asset.
  • Understanding of Human Resources practices and working within a unionized environment.

Salary posted will be pro-rated based on FTE and achieved as per the collective agreement, if applicable.
