Job Description

About the role

Rippling is building foundational AI Platform systems that will power AI capabilities across the company’s product ecosystem, including Payroll, Benefits, HR Products, Talent, Spend, IT, and Data Cloud.

As a Software Engineer II on the AI Platform team, you will work on backend and platform systems that support AI agents, automated workflows, evaluation systems, data pipelines, and model-quality feedback loops. This is a highly hands-on role where 70–80% coding is non-negotiable.

This role is ideal for engineers who are strong in backend engineering, enjoy writing high-quality production code, and are excited to build in an AI-first platform environment.

What you will do

  • Build backend and platform components for Rippling’s AI Platform.
  • Contribute to AI infrastructure supporting background agents, automated workflows, evals, data pipelines, and reliability systems.
  • Write clean, maintainable, testable, and scalable production code.
  • Own well-defined features, services, or modules end-to-end with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Participate in design discussions, code reviews, testing, debugging, and production support.
  • Work with Senior, Staff, and Senior Staff engineers to translate technical designs into production systems.
  • Build systems with strong attention to reliability, observability, scalability, and operational correctness.
  • Develop understanding of AI platform concepts such as agents, LLM infrastructure, evals, workflow automation, and model quality loops.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of software engineering experience, preferably in backend, platform, infrastructure, or distributed systems.
  • Strong hands-on coding ability; 70–80% coding expectation is non-negotiable.
  • Strong programming knowledge in one or more languages such as Python, Java, Go/Golang, C++, Scala, Kotlin, or C#.
  • Good understanding of APIs, databases, data modeling, debugging, testing, and production systems.
  • Ability to own well-defined engineering tasks and components with limited guidance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn quickly in complex technical areas.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced product engineering environment.
  • Curiosity or exposure to AI agents, LLM infrastructure, automation systems, ML/data infrastructure, evals, or adjacent AI systems is a plus.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience working on backend/platform systems at scale.
  • Exposure to Python, SQL, data pipelines, workflow systems, or automation platforms.
  • Prior experience in high-growth product companies or startup-like environments.
  • Interest in AI platform infrastructure, agentic workflows, eval frameworks, or model-quality systems.
  • Exposure to enterprise SaaS, fintech, HR tech, payroll, benefits, compliance, IT, or workflow-heavy platforms.
