Occupational Therapist Position for the 2026-2027 school year
POSITION SUMMARY
The South La Porte County Special Education Cooperative Occupational Therapist develops, implements, and
coordinates the occupational therapy program to improve student access, progress, and participation in school
routines and programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
● Evaluate developmental skill levels of students through a variety of functional, behavioral, and standardized
assessments, skilled observation, checklists, histories, and interviews.
● Synthesize evaluation results into a comprehensive written report which reflects strengths and barriers to
participation in the educational environment; directs program development and guides evidence-based
therapy.
● Evaluate, design, adapt and implement activities, materials, devices and equipment to meet individual student
needs.
● Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to review evaluation results, integrate findings with other disciplines,
offer recommendations, and develop individual education plans (IEP) to achieve IEP goals.
● Coordinate with the IEP team prior to and during the case conference to determine appropriate occupational
therapy provisions and goals, and to monitor the progress of IEP goals.
● Train the instructional staff to meet individual needs and to help students function as independently as
possible in the school environment.
● Supervise certified and support staff to ensure the safety of students.
● Teach, monitor, and collaborate with educational personnel, community agencies, parents, and students to
increase understanding of the student’s occupational performance.
● Use professional judgment to independently review outcomes and modify provisions and goals/benchmarks.
● Monitor and reassess the effects of occupational therapy and the need to continue, modify, or discontinue
therapy.
● Confer with staff as requested concerning any educational needs of students receiving occupational therapy.
● Enter occupational therapy services for Medicaid Reimbursement on a monthly basis
● Manage inventory of therapeutic equipment and assessments.
● Perform any other duties assigned by the Director and/or Supervisor of South La Porte County Special
Education Cooperative
Minimum Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from an accredited program or university.
● Certified by the National Board of Certified Occupational Therapist.
● Licensed by the state of Indiana.
● Successful ability to interpret documents such as medical reports and recommendations, psychological
reports, referral reports, procedure manuals and required Individualized Education Plans.
● Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, and student goals/benchmarks.
● Demonstrate interpersonal skills needed to communicate in a tactful, sincere, effective manner with parents,
school staff, administrators, and students.
● Expertise in solving practical problems with a variety of variables in the school setting.
● Ability to work with a high level of independence and professional discretion.
● Commitment to collaboration and effectiveness in working within a professional learning community.
● Evidence of continuous professional learning and a commitment to participate in professional growth
opportunities and self-reflection on professional practice.
Terms of Employment
Approximately seven (7) hours per day, one hundred eighty-five (185) days per year This position is considered
to be an exempt position under the terms of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and as such the employee
filling this position is not entitled to compensatory time or other compensation for hours worked over and above
the regular thirty-five (35) hour work week. The salary for this position is established by the Superintendent and
the Board of School Trustees.
Evaluation
Performance of this job is evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board of School Trustees’ policy on
Evaluation of Support Personnel. The assigned school administrator will conduct the evaluation of this position.
Before an individual can work with students or have his/her name submitted for approval to the Board of School Trustees, the candidate must complete the background check authorization (at a cost of $15.00--cash or check) and the background check must receive a "cleared" rating. Additionally, the individual must complete a federal I-9 form (providing appropriate identification documents); tax forms; a direct-deposit form (with an attached voided check); and, view training videos at the Educational Services Center (approximately one hour in length).
