About the role
The Staff Writer is responsible for researching, analyzing, and creating high-quality content focused on firearms, Second Amendment issues, self-defense law, constitutional rights, and related public policy matters. This position serves as a critical bridge between complex legal concepts and everyday citizens by translating legal developments into accurate, understandable, and engaging content.
The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of the firearms industry, federal and state firearm laws, self-defense legal principles, and the ability to communicate complex topics with clarity and precision. This individual will contribute articles, legal analyses, educational resources, interviews, and multimedia content that support the organization's mission of educating and empowering responsible firearm owners and self-defense advocates.
Duties and Responsibilities
Legal Research and Analysis
- Monitor and analyze federal, state, and local legislative developments affecting firearm ownership, concealed carry, self-defense, and constitutional rights.
- Research and interpret court decisions, legal opinions, regulatory actions, and legislative proposals.
- Translate complex legal issues into clear, accurate, and accessible content for a broad audience.
- Stay current on emerging trends and developments within firearms law and self-defense jurisprudence.
Content Development
- Produce well-researched articles, legal breakdowns, educational guides, opinion-neutral analyses, and policy updates.
- Create content tailored to firearm owners, attorneys, instructors, law enforcement professionals, and self-defense advocates.
- Develop long-form and short-form content for magazines, websites, newsletters, blogs, and social media.
- Maintain a consistent editorial voice while ensuring factual accuracy and legal integrity.
Subject Matter Expert Interviews
- Conduct interviews with attorneys, judges, law enforcement personnel, firearm instructors, industry experts, and policymakers.
- Develop authoritative story concepts and content based on expert insights and current events.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with legal and industry sources.
Accuracy and Compliance
- Verify all facts, statistics, legal references, and sources before publication.
- Ensure correct firearm terminology, nomenclature, and technical descriptions are consistently used.
- Collaborate with legal counsel, editors, and subject matter experts to review sensitive or legally significant content.
- Adhere to editorial standards, journalistic ethics, company policies, and applicable media regulations.
Multimedia and Cross-Platform Content
- Adapt long-form content into social media posts, video scripts, email campaigns, podcasts, and other digital formats.
- Assist in content planning and editorial calendar development.
- Support marketing and audience engagement initiatives through content repurposing.
Editorial Collaboration
- Participate in editorial meetings, content planning sessions, and publication reviews.
- Contribute ideas for feature stories, recurring columns, legal alerts, and special projects.
- Meet established deadlines while maintaining high standards of quality and accuracy.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Communications, English, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Public Policy, Law, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
Experience
- Minimum of 3-5 years of professional writing, journalism, legal reporting, or content development experience.
- Demonstrated experience covering legal, constitutional, public policy, firearms, self-defense, or related topics.
- Experience working with subject matter experts and conducting professional interviews.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of the firearms industry and Second Amendment issues.
- Ability to read, interpret, and accurately summarize court opinions, legislative bills, statutes, and regulatory language.
- Excellent research, analytical, and fact-checking skills.

Portfolio Requirement
- Submission of a professional writing portfolio demonstrating the ability to explain complex legal, technical, or policy-related subjects to a general audience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s in journalism.
- Paralegal certification.
- Degree or professional background in Criminal Justice, Constitutional Law, Public Policy, or related disciplines.
- Active License to Carry (LTC), Concealed Handgun License (CHL), or equivalent permit.
- Certified firearm instructor credentials.
- Experience within the firearms, hunting, outdoor recreation, or self-defense industries.
- Knowledge of digital publishing platforms, SEO best practices, and content marketing strategies.
- Experience writing for magazines, trade publications, or educational organizations.
