ABOUT
Learning Commons student assistants provide customer service and administrative support in various departments within the Learning Commons, including the Library Services’ circulation desk, Tutoring Services’ reception desk, and the Center for Academic Exams’ reception desk. Student assistants interact with students, faculty, staff, and visitors to assist with a variety of services.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and DUTIES
Primary Responsibilities
Library Services Circulation Desk
- Complete opening/closing duties of the building based on the work schedule.
- Provide desk coverage and greet patrons in a friendly manner.
- Assist patrons in checking out and returning library materials.
- Shelve books and reorganize any that are out of order.
- Check book drops for any returned books.
- Answer questions related to library resources, policies, procedures, and workshops.
- Provide guidance to patrons on library resources, including online databases and research tools.
- Conduct an hourly headcount to maintain an accurate record of library attendance.
- Assist with processing journals and magazines.
Tutoring Services Reception Desk
- Provide desk coverage and greet students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a friendly manner.
- Assist in scheduling and canceling tutoring appointments.
- Keep track of tutors’ arrival and departure.
- Keep track of daily appointments and introduce students to their tutors.
- Provide basic information about tutoring services, academic resources, and workshops.
- Notify students and tutors of appointment changes or cancellations.
- Complete daily data entry and filing.
The Center for Academic Exams Reception Desk
- Provide desk coverage and greet students and faculty in a friendly manner.
- Assist in scheduling and canceling exam appointments.
- Check in students for scheduled and walk-in exams, verify identification, and fill out intake forms.
- Check out students upon completion of exams.
- Answer student, faculty, and staff questions regarding exam procedures and policies.
- Assist students with scheduling issues by calmly addressing concerns, explaining appointment procedures, offering alternative solutions, and providing support for rescheduling or contacting appropriate personnel when walk-in slots are unavailable.
- Monitor and enforce exam protocols by ensuring students store backpacks, purses, bags, cell phones, and smartwatches in the personal belongings area. Direct students to remove hats and headphones/ear buds. Check students’ arms to verify no unauthorized notes.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Answer phone in a courteous and polite manner and take accurate messages as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Assist with clerical tasks and maintain the orderliness of the workstation.
- Keep supply areas tidy and organized.
- Perform hand-delivery of mail to other campus offices.
- Support department staff with special projects or events as needed.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings.
- Perform light cleaning duties such as dusting, cleaning tables, pushing in chairs, throwing away trash, etc.
- Help maintain a quiet, respectful, and clean study/testing environment.
- Promote Learning Commons student support services.

If travel is required, the candidate must have and maintain a current, valid Texas driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
WHO YOU ARE
Students must be registered for undergraduate classes and maintain enrollment status to work in these positions. Students may qualify for Federal Work Study, which will be determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
Additional Job-Specific Requirements
Students are allowed to work a maximum of eighteen (18) hours per week and cannot work in multiple hourly positions. A work week is Sunday-Saturday.
