Our mission is simple: make our clients successful.

As we begin building our presence in Boise, our Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Global Practice is looking for a Substation Department Manager to help lead and shape that expansion. This role sets the strategic direction for our Substation business, develops a high‑performing team, and supports strong project delivery across the region.

You’ll work closely with regional and national Substation leadership as we build a dynamic, innovative, and people‑focused team in Boise.

Key Responsibilities

People Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of substation engineers and designers, fostering a collaborative and high‑performance culture.
  • Partner with HR and Recruiting to attract top talent and support onboarding for new hires.
  • Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging while reinforcing Burns & McDonnell’s MacCulture values.
  • Conduct performance reviews, support career development, and strengthen technical and EPC delivery capabilities.
  • Collaborate with global engineering resources, including Burns & McDonnell India, to support project needs.

Market Strategy & Growth

  • Shape and execute the strategic plan for Substation growth in the Boise region.
  • Understand industry trends and align service offerings with evolving market needs.
  • Partner with Marketing, Account Management, and Business Development to pursue opportunities and strengthen client relationships.
  • Support proposal development, pricing strategies, and pursuit decisions.
  • Drive cross‑selling and collaboration across Global Practices and regions.

Project Execution & Technical Excellence

  • Serve as a senior technical advisor on substation engineering projects.
  • Monitor project performance to ensure quality, schedule, and budget expectations are met.
  • Support QA/QC processes and adherence to the T&D Quality Management System.
  • Champion innovative tools, technologies, and workflows to improve project delivery.
  • Coordinate with cross‑regional and global teams to optimize resources and technical direction.

Cross‑Regional Collaboration

  • Align with national and regional leaders on standards, tools, and best practices.
  • Support shared pursuits and client work across T&D departments and offices.
  • Reinforce a “One Burns & McDonnell” approach to delivery and client service.

Financial Performance

  • Ensure sustainable, profitable growth through effective staffing, utilization, and workload management.
  • Monitor financial performance, chargeability, and overhead investment.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts to enhance efficiency and consistency.

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, construction or related degree from an accredited program and 7 years related professional experience in design and/or project management is required.
  • Previous leadership and/or management experience is preferable.
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
  • Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.
  • Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.
  • Must be expert in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
