Job Description:

Reports to the CAD Development Project Manager.

  • Responsible for the supervision of an interdisciplinary team of Designers that test and help manage BIW’s CAD software, known as the CAD Development Lab.
  • Operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS), this position ensures delivery of superior CAD Dev support for the DDG 51 and BBGN programs.

 

Key Responsibilities
 
Safety Leadership:

  • Promotes a culture of proactive safety awareness and accountability across the team.
  • Ensures safe workplace conditions and compliance with company safety standards.
  • Maintains regular communications with staff as it relates to ergonomic and Shipyard safety.

 Program Execution:

  • Oversees the team executing CAD/PLM studies for the BBGN program, ensuring compliance with all contractual requirements.
  • Ensures design tasks are completed to established schedule, cost, and quality parameters.
  • Processes and verifies employee time accounting records and ensures required LMS trainings are completed ahead of schedule.
  • Maintains and executes a Plan of the Week (POW) to align daily tasking with program milestones and operational needs.
  • Implements corrective actions to address deficiencies and ensure contract deliverables are produced ahead of schedule.

 Operational Management:

  • Manages all aspects of BIW CAD Dev team activities, including workforce performance and resource utilization in accordance with BIW Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Regularly communicates progress on issues with CAD Dev team leadership.
  • Monitors cost, schedule, and quality metrics to identify employee development opportunities.
  • Provides guidance and direction across the team for Process, Policy and Technical issues.
  • Works with the project manager to evaluate workload requirements.
  • Administers the BMDA labor contract.

 Team Collaboration and Communication:

  • Provides leadership and direction to the Design team, supporting day-to-day operations and long-term planning.
  • Holds daily, productive musters, utilizing the BOS to elevate any issues through the tiered muster system.
  • Develops employee performance evaluations.
  • Supports development of personnel, staffing plans, and critical skill maintenance.
  • Fosters collaboration between engineering, design, planning, configuration management, and external customers.
  • Communicates regularly and effectively with parties external to BIW as the CAD/PLM tasking requires.

 Stakeholder Engagement and Business Development:

  • Requests and ensures incorporation of stakeholder comments to design products.
  • Initiates and supports waste and growth initiatives within your team.

 Continuous Improvement:

  • Champions BOS principles and productivity enhancements across the CAD Dev team.
  • Leverages A3 root cause analysis and associated corrective action plans for identified design issues.


Required/Preferred Education/Training:

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in technical or business field, or a BIW graduate Apprentice (Manufacturing or Design), or minimum 3-5 years of job-related experience.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient in navigating within a Microsoft Access database.

 Preferred: 

  • AutoCAD training.
  • Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) training
  • LEAN SIX Sigma training.
  • Agile/SCRUM training.
  • Microsoft Project experience.

 



Required/Preferred Experience:

Required:

  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal & written) with all levels of the company and customers.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to foster a constructive and motivated work environment based on teaming.
  • Proven ability to work in a dynamic, fast paced, rapid response technical environment.
  • Occasional weekend overtime supervision coverage will be required.
  • Occasional travel will be required.

 Preferred:

  • Familiar with BIW tools and processes, specifically those used in the Design and Engineering Services department.
  • Familiar with ship specifications as related to design requirements.
  • Working knowledge of the BMDA collective bargaining agreement.
  • Working experience with Earned Value Management.
