About the Role
The Preventative Maintenance Technician performs scheduled maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on City vehicles, construction equipment, small engine equipment, and shop equipment while ensuring all work is completed safely, accurately, and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on all types of equipment and maintain accurate records within the Equipment Services Fleet Management Software
- Conduct North Carolina State inspections on vehicles equipped with On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) technology and identify emissions-related malfunctions
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical issues on City automobiles, trucks, and gasoline and diesel-powered maintenance and construction equipment
- Diagnose, maintain, and repair electrical and electronic systems, including ignition systems, computers, alternators, and batteries
- Repair and replace components such as wiper blades, filters, belts, lights, and other equipment parts
- Perform daily forklift inspections and maintain inspection logs
- Operate, maintain, and repair shop equipment, including hoists, grinders, welders, compressors, steam cleaners, hydraulic presses, and machine lathes
- Perform on-site and off-site service calls to support operational needs
- Clean and maintain maintenance workshops and service vehicles
- Repair small engine equipment, including chainsaws, weed eaters, trimmers, blowers, and pressure washers
- Follow all departmental safety procedures and established work practices
- This is a Non-Exempt position under FLSA.
Additional Position Details
- Position requires walking, stooping, bending, climbing, and lifting
- Work is performed in both shop and outdoor environments with exposure to dust, grease, noise, heat, cold, and inclement weather
- Must possess or obtain the following within six months of employment:
- North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- North Carolina Emission/Safety Inspection License
- ASE Air Conditioning Recovery Certification
- Position requires flexibility to perform both routine and emergency maintenance assignments

Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- "OR" 3 years of education + 3 years of related heavy truck and equipment maintenance work experience
- Valid driver's license
- 1+ years in Automotive and Heavy Truck and Equipment maintenance
Preferred Qualifications:
- Class B CDL License
- Certified NC Emission/Safety Inspection License
- ASE Air Conditioning Recovery Certification
