About the Department
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATIONThe purpose of this classification is to primarilyidentify, coordinate, document maintain and/or perform a variety of preventative maintenance and light repair on transit vehicles. Position will be responsible for scheduling and negotiation cost for repairs through vendors, transports, or coordinates transport of vehicles for repairs/replacement. This individual will also be a bus driver, backup dispatcher and administrative support as assigned.

Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
As Maintenance Technician:
Coordinates vehicle repairs as problems arise. Serves as the point of contact for department employees responsible for reporting mechanical problems. Prioritize work orders for repairs, inspects, performs preventive maintenance and various minor repairs on department vehicles according to agency’s Maintenance Plan; uses a variety of testing procedures and equipment to diagnose problems; restore vehicles and equipment to good working condition. Maintenance work ranges from preventive maintenance to light repair. Ensures the quality of work performed meets safety guidelines and complies with agency policies/plans applicable to standards, warranty, andlegal requirements.
Replaces parts on equipment, such as light bulbs, seatbelts, door/window handles, wiper blades, mirrors, exterior caulking; assists in maintaining parts and supplies inventory.
Assures safe work area; cleans shop and equipment.
Conducts vehicles inspection and preventive maintenance work.
Coordinates with supervisor and grant coordinator regarding department budget or restrictions and the need for Purchase Orders. Responsible for ordering and managing inventory of items needed to keep up with maintenance and repair needs. Negotiates parts and repair costs with vendors.
Test drives vehicles and equipment to ensure proper working conditions.
Maintains logs of work performed and parts used/purchased; maintains equipment and vehicle records.
Transports vehicles and equipment to outside shops for repairs as needed.
Assist in planning and scheduling work; assists in delivery of replacement vehicles. Cross trained to perform Dispatcher/Driver duties. May be called upon to assist dispatch or drivers to complete daily work as needed.
Attends safety meetings and required driver training.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Operates a vehicle lift, brake lathe, welder, flush machine, air conditioner recovery machine volt and amp machine, mechanic’s tools, hand tools, power tools, pick-up truck, diagnostic equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
As administrative support:
Assist the Grant Coordinator and Transit Department Head with departmental administrative task.
Establishes, updates and maintains databases, files and records in automated information systems; enters data into system files and databases; researches and retrieves information from databases; incorporates data into assigned records and documents; creates statistical reports and summaries from data; and generates automated reports from systems.
As a dispatcher:
Answers multi-line phone that includes a variety of requests for information and rides. Enters and maintains data in computer as needed; enters and retrieves technical information from a computer in order to perform research, update records, or respond to requests for information.
Maintains mobile radio system contact with drivers and other departmental staff.
Schedules reservations and determines driver’s daily caseload and route order.
Print and review all drive’s manifest for the next day
Coordinates the daily activities of all drivers
Schedule and place same day rides, demand response, for customers
Schedules group service with local agencies, coordinating service with representative of each
agency.
Maintain daily grids of all DHR Coordinated rides for billing each month
Send cancellation and no-show reports to area agencies
Assists with special projects to include nights and weekends when necessary.
Attends and participates in job related meetings, training sessions and seminars as requested by Agency Supervisor.
Maintains up-to-date basic first aid and CPR certifications and emergency response procedures.
Provides locations and directions to drivers and the public using mapping tools.
Operates a computer, printer, radio console, facsimile machine, copier, calculator, multi-line phone, radio communications equipment, TTY/TDD system, headsets, weather computer, paper shredder, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
When driving a bus:
Safely operates buses over county/city roads at sustained legally allowed speeds, in a manner that fosters a safe and conscientious image to the public;
Conducts safe and orderly loading and unloading of passengers;
Attends meetings pertaining to the job;
Performs routine operator care to include: washing the bus; sweeping interior; refueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, checking equipment and reporting defects; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety, cleaning Dispatch office and/or work areas and presenting bus for regularly scheduled maintenance;
Accomplishes and submits mileage reports and bus conduct reports, as required;
Responsible for ensuring all accidents are immediately reported to the Dispatcher Coordinator;
Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure the safety of other employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Washes and waxes vehicles; Conducts random inspections, checks air pressure and fluids in vehicles. Employees in this classification may be required to drive routes, fuel equipment, back up dispatch staff, and assist in emergency first aid and/or transportation as needed
Ensures cleaning list is completed by all drivers during shift, including sweeping and vacuuming floor, taking out trash, wiping down all surfaces, dusting, cleaning restrooms and kitchen area, shredding documents, and emptying shredder.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; three years of general office experience, two years experience working with computers using Microsoft Office: Excel and Word. Three years of experience in vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance; geographical knowledge of the area; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain the following certifications: a valid Georgia appropriate class Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with (P) Passenger endorsement(s).
Must possess considerable knowledge of: local, state and federal traffic laws/regulations, proper use and operation of two-way radio equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. No reckless driving or driving under the influence convictions within five years and/or fewer than two moving violations within each 12 months of employment.
Employee must obtain certification in PASS and DIP/AAA training as well as CPR/First Aid.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Five years of experience in vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance
Previous experience with multi line phone and mobile radio.
Previous bus driving experience
