General Responsibilities Summary

Operates a variety of trucks and assists crew in the collection of garbage/trash/yard waste by safely and efficiently performing the following duties.


Essential Functions


The list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.  Other duties may be assigned.  Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.
 
Drives truck: completes an assigned garbage or yard waste collection route daily; maintains safety standards for driving and garbage/yard waste collection; and/or assists with manual collection of garbage, trash or yard waste as necessary.

Performs routine daily maintenance on truck or equipment: completes morning and/or afternoon preventive maintenance routine; checks lubricants, fuel, hydraulic fluids, water, etc. adding as needed; cleans vehicle or equipment daily or as specified by management.
  
Supervises a crew of helpers: provides daily task instructions and direction; provides information and assists Route Supervisor with annual performance appraisals; completes applicable incident reports and/or recommends disciplinary action to the supervisor as necessary.     
                                                                             
Assists department employees with other tasks or duties required when primary duties are completed.                                                                                              


 


Minimum Qualifications

Less than a high school diploma and six months directly related experience driving a large truck and performing heavy manual labor. Experience operating a boom or crane is preferred.  
 
A Class "B" commercial driver's license and good driving record are required and must be maintained throughout employment.
        Vehicles or equipment required to be operated in this position are:
                10,000 lb. (+ or -) cab/chassis yard waste truck,
                30,000 lb. (+ or -) cab/chassis garbage truck,
                ½ or ¾ ton pickup truck, or
                Any other vehicle assigned to the Sanitation Department
 


Application Requirements


The complexity, guidelines, supervisory controls, and supervision responsibilities described below are representative of this position.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
The supervisor makes assignments by defining objectives, priorities, and deadlines; and assists employee with unusual situations, which do not have clear precedents. The employee plans and carries out the successive steps and handles problems and deviations in the work assignment in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted practices in the occupation. Completed work is usually evaluated for technical soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. The methods used in arriving at the end results are not usually reviewed in detail.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Provides first line supervision of truck crew of up to two employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; directing work; assisting Route Supervisor with evaluating performance of crewmembers; recommends commendations or disciplinary actions involving crewmembers, and resolves routine problems while out on the route. All supervisors are responsible for the safety and welfare of subordinates and must be familiar with EEO fair employment laws and practices (Title VII as amended, including sexual or racial harassment or discrimination, ADEA, ADA, FMLA) and for ensuring that fair and non-discriminatory employment practices are followed within his/her area of responsibility.
 
COMPLEXITY:
The work consists of duties that involve related steps, processes, or methods; the decision regarding what needs to be done involves various choices requiring the employee to recognize the existence of and differences among a few easily recognizable situations; actions to be taken or responses to be made differ in such things as the source of information, the kind of transactions or entries, or other differences of a factual nature.  
 
GUIDELINES:
A number of specific guidelines are available; judgment is used in locating and selecting the most appropriate guidelines; minor deviations can be made in specific cases; significant deviations are referred to the supervisor. The employee rarely makes any decisions that affect persons or situations beyond the scope of his/her job.

Longevity Pay - After completing a full year of employment with the City of North Little Rock, an employee is granted longevity pay at the rate of $5.25 per month times the number of years employed.

Vacation - Accrual begins with date of hire with eligibility to use accrued vacation leave after six months of service.  Vacation may be accumulated to a maximum of 30 days. Vacation is calculated:

Sick Leave - All full-time, regular, non-uniformed employees earn twenty (20) sick leave days annually with unlimited accumulation.

Discretionary Leave - Employees with two or more years of continuous service on January 1 of each year are granted 16-48 hours discretionary leave during that year, depending on length of service.

Retirement Plan - Mandatory and contributory, begins immediately.
