FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION: 

Executes and supports all actions required to process and compliantly package Contact Handled, Remote Handled and Oxide TRU Wastes, this also includes Low Level, Mixed Low Level and Secondary Waste. 

Waste Operator Trainee

Education/Experience: 

Entry level: AA/AS degree in Chemistry or related field or 3 years of in high hazard waste handling (DOE/Nuclear preferred) with a high school diploma or equivalent. 

Required Training / Qualifications: 

• Capable of acquiring a DOE Security Clearance 

• Meet physical qualifications of a radiation worker and ability to qualify as a Radiation Worker II with an annual Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) fit test and Supplied Air Respiratory Training 

Level Specific Responsibilities: Under direct supervision: 

• Perform activities of Waste Operator as directed by the Floor Supervisor or Waste Processing Manager or Facility Manager 

• Complete qualifications in Material Handling required for handling and storage of radioactive waste containers 


Waste Operator A

Education/Experience: AA/AS in Chemistry or related field and 8 years of directly relevant experience, along with demonstrated competency in WO Trainee/Apprentice qualifications. A minimum of 12 years of recent, relevant and progressive waste handling experience is required with a high school diploma or high school equivalency, along with demonstrated competency in WO Trainee qualifications. 

Required Training / Qualifications: 

All required training and qualifications listed as a WO Trainee and 

• Site Specific Spotter Qualification 

• Site Specific Fuel Attendant Qualification 

• Crane Operations Qualification 

• Cask Processing Enclosure Operation Qualification 

• Hoisting and Rigging Rigger Qualification 

• General Forklift Operation 

• Verification and Validation Qualification 

• Waste Operations Qualification Level Specific Responsibilities: Under general supervision: 

• Perform Glovebox, Box Breakdown Area, and Cask Processing Enclosure Waste Operations which includes waste processing of Contact 

and Remote Handled drums and Boxes as well as Oxide and potentially energetic material Drums, Glovebox glove change outs, radiological 

and PCB decontamination activities, process area ventilation filter replacements. 

• Perform V & V of operating procedures after the revision process. 

•Perform waste operations which include waste box and drum movements into and out of the area under radiological controls, waste 

processing in supplied air suits and PAPRs, size reduction of waste articles using hand and portable power tools, hoisting and rigging activities and decontamination of work areas and containers.
